How to Write Breakup Poems to Your Ex
Breakup poems can be an amazing way to mend a broken heart and actually "make-up" instead of "break-up." Not a poet? No problem. Not a writer? So what? This article will give you the top 5 tips for writing an amazing breakup poem. Who knows...you might even be able to get your ex back and play Shakespeare at the same time.
5. Choose your Key Images
Poems are all about imagery. If you don't remember your high-school English class, that's OK. Imagery just means drawing pictures with words. So instead of saying, "I love you a lot" you might say "I love you so bad it feels like my soul is ripping itself to shreds." (Hey, it's just an example!) The point is to pick a few key images/pictures and play with them throughout the poem. And they don't have to be visual, they can be sounds, smells, tastes, or even touches ("Your muscles feel like cut granite beneath my fingertips" to a guy or "Your skin is as smooth as satin" to a girl). Make sure your images are things your ex can relate to.Some of your images might sound a little cheesy at first, but if you keep up consistent images the whole poem will really hold together.
4. Skip the Rhymes
Let's get something out of the way: your poem does NOT need to rhyme! In fact, trying to force your lines into a rhyming scheme will many times result in the whole thing sounding weird and forced. (I will make a definite exception for you if you have that certain talent for the turn-of-phrase that turns everyday people into hip-hop stars.) The lines and rhythms should flow naturally. What makes it poetry is not rhyming, but choosing your words carefully and drawing pictures that conjure up emotions. If you there's enough emotion, your ex will never even notice it didn't rhyme. Which brings us to...
3. Write from the Heart
Sounds obvious, right? But many people get so wrapped up in whether they have the right word or a comma in the right place that they lose sight of what's really important. And that is simply telling your ex how you feel, from your heart, from your soul, from the very depths of your bottomless emotional self. I mean, your soul probably DOES feel like it's been ripped apart, right? Otherwise you wouldn't be writing a breakup poem to try to win them back in the first place. Don't let anything come between the paper and your raw feelings. Try starting with "I feel like..." and then jotting down some of the first things that come to mind. The more they play upon your ex's senses the better. (Don't forget taste, touch, smell.) Then take those thoughts and work them into your poem.
2. Get Help
When you've finished your first draft, read it through and see how it's sounding. Fix any rough spots. Even out the lines. Tweak the images. When you're pretty satisfied, but you haven't spent a hundred hours, it's time to get some help. No, I'm not saying from me or your old English teacher or even your parents (although they might be pretty helpful if you have a great relationship with them). I'm thinking more like your best friend or maybe even a friend of the opposite sex who you really trust. Trust is the key in this -- it's going to be pretty darn personal if you've followed these steps. But the point of getting help with your breakup poem is to make sure it's coming across the way you intended. Not creepy, not cheesy, and definitely not funny...unless you wrote it that way.
1. Deliver in Person
Were you thinking of emailing this poem? Writing it out by hand and leaving it on your ex's doorstep? Sending it in a text? Well hold your horses, because you'd be about to lose half the impact. You spent all that time and effort writing your masterpiece, now you just want them to read it without you having any control over when, or where, or with whom? What if your ex is sitting on the toilet when they get your email? Blech! I recommend -- no, I INSIST -- that you write the whole thing out nicely on a piece of paper and take it to your ex and read it out loud in person. There's no substitute. Writing it out by hand shows you've really put some serious effort into it. I know we're living in a wired world, but trust me on this one. Get your ex where you want them, set the tone, then deliver. And don't worry too much if you flub a line. They'll get the message.

And that's it! But if you REALLY want to make up with your ex, you owe it to yourself to read a bit more...seriously Click Here to find out how a breakup poem can help you get back together.
