The Sweeping Popularity of American Football
The term "American football" refers to a type of game, not a regional sport. American football is enjoyed world-wide. Professional American-style football leagues exist in Canada, Europe, South America and Japan. NFL Europa is a organization operated by the US based National Football League. NFL Europa has teams in six German and Dutch cities. In Canada, there are 2 organizations, the Canadian Footbal Leage, a professional league, and Canadian University Spot, which is a network of nonprofessional University level teams.
Both Canadian leagues play American style football but with some variations known as Canadian Rules. New Zealand, Mexico, Japan and several other countries have amateur football leagues. American style football is governed by the international Federation Of American Football (IFAF), which has over 45 affliates in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australasia. However, the true moving force in american footbal is the NFL, or National Football Association.
The NFL is the regulatory and organizational arm of football in the US. It makes and enforces rules for sportsmanship and drug use. When a player behaves overly aggressively during a game, misses practice sessions or becomes involved in extracurricular illegal activity, the NFL will impose a fine and/or suspend a player. The NFL bans recreational and steroid, or performance enhancing, drug use. It authorizes and conducts urine testing on its professional atheles.
The NFL also decides yearly whether the rules of the game should be changed, and in what ways. Often the rules are done to make the game more interesting or more fair. Safety is another motivation behind rule change and the NFL tries to make this aggressive and even violent game as safe as possible by modifying the existing rules and the forms of protective equipment used. However, merchandising is also a factor and the NFL has advocated rule changes, such as a sponsor time out which is a pause in the play of the game, that are solely for the purpose of allowing the sponsor to show commercials.
The NFL decides which cities can have a team and how many teams will make up the two franchises, The Amercan Football League and the National Football League, which originally was the only and prototypic league in American football. Fans have intese loyalties to these two franchises, which is capitalized upon in the yearly Superbowl. This game was established to play upon this rivalry and pits the AFL and NFL Champions against each other. This is held in February and is the single most watched event on American television. It is an event that begins weeks in advance with football interveiws, panels of sports figures who speculate on the game's outcome, and bettiing oportunities. This hype grows over the weeks of playoff games and builds to a near frenzy by the time Superbowl Sunday arrives.
The game is an all day event with ceremonies and a legendary half time, Las Vegas style, show that features top celebrities. For the multitudes watching at home, the Super Bowl is also augmented by the premeire screening of a collection of the most innovative and often humorous advertising blips. Because of the exposure and the terrific numbers of viewers, the competition to be one of the favored advertisers is nearly as hearty as the team competition to play in this game.
American Football is sweeping the rest of the world and becoming a popular phenomenon in nearly every country. This growth in popularity is slower in countries that have established rugby or soccer francishes but American Football is rapidly becoming as popular as American fast food.

Injured in Iraq or Afganistan? Civilian Contract Workers Can Get Compensation
After 9/11, many americans decided to risk their lives working for companies who provided services for the U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. War zones can sometimes prove as dangerous to civilians as to military personnel.
Tragically, many of these workers became injured while overseas. Adding to their difficulties, many of these injured workers, who put themselves on the line working in support of the American mission, faced steep medial expenses and loss of income as they recovered.
Some also lost their lives, leaving their families destitute. Many others who are unable to work watch their family's savings and assets dwindle, and their security disappear.
A law exists to ensure fair workers compensation for these people. It's called the Defense Base Act. Unfortunately, too few people in need of its protection understand their own rights under the law. Even fewer know what to do to guarantee those rights.
Recuperation can be difficult enough without mounting bills, the threat of bankruptcy, and an inability to get proper medical care and rehabilitation. That's to say nothing of the financial threat to the families involved.
The Defense Base Act requires that contractors working with the U.S. Military in war zones carry worker's compensation insurance. This type of insurance is compulsory for organizations employing U.S. citizens or residents, and all employees or subcontractors hired on overseas government contracts.
However, these companies sometimes fail to inform workers of their rights. Worse, the insurance carriers often refuse claims, abandoning injured Americans who supported the American mission to face crushing expenses and debt on their own.
Fortunately, Federal law provides a genuine solution, though unfortunately few injured workers know how to apply it. The Defense Base Act is part of the Longshoremen and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act, and covers to employees of government contractors working overseas under contract to the United States Government.
Specifically, the Act covers workers employed by American contractors performing public works for the U.S. government in U.S. territories, or at U.S. military bases located outside the continental United States, in support of military aid programs within allied nations. Workers are protected under the Act, even if they are only employed to build embassies and other U.S. government buildings abroad. As with domestic workers compensation laws, the Act covers medical treatment and compensation for defense contractors employees injured in the course of employment.
For thousands of American workers injured abroad, the Defense Base Act has provided support them under devastating circumstances. Claims under the Act have been successfully filed by many individuals, including some contact workers injured in Korea, VietNam, both Iraq wars, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. All of these come under the general coverage of the Act.
The Defense Base Act mandates that any injured worker should be confident of having an attorney at his side to ensure a just outcome. Both injured workers and family member of someone who has died from job injuries overseas are covered. Compensation is also allowable for partial loss of earnings, and significant death benefits are commonly paid to spouses and family.
Fortunately, injured workers or their families are not responsible for legal fees for a DBA injury claim. The Defense Base Act requires that all attorney fees depend entirely on the amount of money the claimant receives. No outrageous legal fees are possible. The fees are awarded by the Department of Labor, and are never included in any other compensation to the claimant. The lawyer is never paid by the injured worker or their family out of the awarded compensation. Instead, compensation is awarded to the attorney by the court, and paid by the insurance company or the original employer.
American civilians working in support U.S. military and U.S. State Department objectives continue to be injured to this day.
For these injured civilians, the key to success in securing just compensation under the Defense Base Act is finding the right lawyer. This is a highly specialized area, and familiarity with standard Workman's Compensation Law is simply inadequate. Claimants are advised to find a Defense Base Act attorney with years of experience and success with these claims.

Flag Day – When is it – What is it – and where did it come from?
Flag Day is observed by Presidential Proclamation on June 14th of each year. Every American however, knows that the Fourth of July is the countries birthday. Then one might ask why "Flag Day" is in June?
The american flag was adopted by the Second Continental Congress in the First Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777. The resolution read:
"Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation."
Although there are several historic accounts of who thought of Flag Day and how it became an annual celebration, BJ Cigrand is generally recognized as being the first to establish an event to honor the US Flag. In 1885, Cigrand, a schoolteacher in Fredonia Wisconsin, arranged for his pupils to observe June 14 as "Flag Birthday". For many years he continued to be an advocate of June 14 as "Flag Birthday" or "Flag Day". On June 14th, 2004, the 108th U.S. Congress voted unanimously on H.R. 662 that Flag Day originated in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.
Over a 10 year period after Cigrand began his tradition, schools, organizations, and local governments in many areas began to recognize and celebrate June 14, as Flag Day. In 1894, the governor of New York directed that the Flag be displayed on all public buildings on June 14th. During the same year, the "American Flag Day Association" was organized in Illinois to promote the holding of Flag Day exercises. On June 14, 1894, due to the work of the Association, 300,000 children in several Illinois cities participated in the first general public school celebration of Flag Day.
After three decades of state and local celebrations, President Woodrow Wilson, on May 30th, 1916, established by Proclamation, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777. For many years, Flag Day was celebrated in various communities, but it wasn't until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
According to the Congressional Act of 1949, the week of June 14 is designated as "National Flag Week." During National Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. The flag should also be displayed on all Government buildings. Some organizations hold parades and events in celebration of our national flag and everything it represents. It's also a time to remember and honor military men and women who defend our flag and our country.
