Recent Trends in Animal Art
Man's best friend has become a common centerpiece, moulded so into works of art and down to the personalized mug. One mother daughter pair from Memphis, Tennessee, admired their dogs so much that they hired a renowned pastel artist to render portraits of them. Though two have already been mourned, they are remembered in these tasteful family portraits. Don't tell her that one canine smile looks about like the next.
With the other two dogs, Kelly Rae, a cockapoo puppy, and Miss Manners, a Lhasa apso, a couple photos was taken last year. Polar opposites, Kelly is inquisitive and sometimes downright nosy, while Miss Manners is aloof. That just about covers it. Serious art collectors have begun to complement their collections with doggie art.
Four fold has the value of quality pet portraits increased since ten years ago, according to a 19th century animal art expert and owner of a Manhattan gallery. His personal record in terms of sales is $577,000 at an auction for a painting of Neptune, a Newfoundland. Two hundred fifty thousand is the going rate for a single profile painting done by a French animalier, now living in Long Island.
The gallery owner Credits the pet parade to a revived interest in Victorian decorating. The English loved to create multitudes of animal paintings not only of their pets but also of other breeding animals such as horses, pigs and sheep whose portraits served as a kind of advertisement. Further, animal art, she says, fills a room with warmth.
Whether high art or pet art, she does not discriminate. She takes the nation's demand for pet paintings seriously. Older portraits may not resemble descendants of the same breed, and in these cases the owner should commission a new painting. Animal artists must work within the guidelines of photos, that they take themselves sometimes, and the instructions of their patrons. A watercolor painter from Germantown, Tennessee, who specializes in landscapes, shared an experience in which she had to redo a duo dog painting to satisfy the request of the patron to see twinkles in the dogs' eyes. On the other hand, with her five pose portrait of a dachshund, she completely satisfied the patron.
One artist who thrives on animal portraits is a lady from Eads, Tennessee who has been doing watercolors of people's houses and their pets for the last 13 years. There have been seldom cases in which she has had to paint cats, fish, and a frog, and more frequently she does dogs and horses. The client's reaction is written on his face, especially when the painting is of a deceased pet. They have a tendency to tear up.
