Composers from all eras & music as well
Since the beginning of humankind, music has been part and parcel of man's culture. In the beginning, music was mainly used for enjoyment, religious and spiritual rituals as well as the romance and love. Since the earlier mankind is characterized by wars and different conflicts, music has played a vital role in this eras especially when drum beats were used during wars. In this way music served as a form of encouragement for the soldiers and hence helps them win in the wars and other different conflicts between the communities (Randel 1986). In this prehistoric period, the evidence of written music is very little but the use of cuneiform writings in the 6000 years in which music served as an important vehicle for civilization. This has been discovered in Mesopotamia and Sumerians in which clay tablets were used to include even the notation keys as well as the scale attesting. However, the idea that musical composers existed in this era is still debatable though most scientists believe that music has been part of our culture for along time in which it has been used for communication.
The era that followed the prehistoric era is known as the Renaissance or the middle ages era and consists of written composed music. This era constitute the music that was written between 550AD and 1550, a period that is known for the development and the advancement in all arts and other technologies (Randel 1986). The major known composer during this era is the Italian Guido who developed the musical notation in the 1033s (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). Guido is considered and respected for advancing music from the traditional to the modern way of representing music in a more clearly and organized manner in Italy. He is responsible for the invention of the five line staff with respect to notation in music in which he developed the first song know as the Gregorian chant.
One single composer during the middle age era is known as Guillaume de Machaut. This was a French composer who developed several rhythms as well as publishing different books that were majorly focused on music as well as other music related arts. He utilized the work of Guido to come up with the repeated notes that had same or different patterns hence enriched the polyphonic arts in this era. He was also supported in this era by another French composer Vitry who also published several books and developed even other rhythms (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). During this era, music played a very important aspect in the culture and other religious and spiritual endeavors. Music also played important role in entertaining as well as in cultural and spiritual ceremonies throughout this era (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). However the work of Guido and Vitry, were important as they helped in the advancement of music to the next level that lead to Baroque era with more composers.
The transition between the middle age era and the Baroque era is associated with a composer known as Claudio Monteverdi whose work was mainly evident in the early 1960s. He is known for helping and engineering the transition from the middle age period to the Brogue era. What this composer did is that he set stage for many of the musicians by then by establishing the first opera in Italy thereby setting stage for most composers to come in during that time period. Unlike the middle age musical era, the Baroque musical era was mainly associated with feelings of nature as well as love. In this era, the composers had changed their message and the use of music primarily for spiritual or religious purposes was changing and most composers were now focusing on mystery as a major philosophy. However, definitive focus on religious and spirituality were evidenced especially through the work of Jonathan Sebastian in late 1600s and early 1700s (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011).
Jonathan is one of the composers in this period that is considered to have innate talent right from his childhood and was able to use his religious music to earn living and support himself. He is also recorded in history as the father of counterpoint due to his passion for the music and the use of organ and clavichord instruments (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). Due to this passion, he never used different modern instruments in that era such as the pianos until he was almost sixties when he was introduced to the pianos. After his introduction to the pianos, he wrote one of the famous music "fugue" to the king Fredrick of Germany as a musical offering. This music by Jonathan is considered as one of the best music in Germany until today.
Another important composer of this era is Beethoven, who was also of German origin. Beethoven was physically challenged; however, this did not hinder him from advancing his talent in music and other arts (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). Despite the fact that he was deaf by the time he was trained by his father due to the constant boxing of his ears by his father during training on pianos, Beethoven emerged as one of the greatest composers during this era. He developed some of the best music that is listened to in many parts of the world even today and made some of the beautiful music in German and Austria. He is known to have written the nine symphonies which are considered the highest number of symphonies that had ever been written by a single composer during that time. He therefore ended up as one of the best composers whose music is still used by major audio music producers.
Wolfgang Mozart is another composer who came later in the ear and is considered as one of the most famous composer. He introduced the new styles of light and other forms of expressions including the darkness to express the musical idea. However, Mozart was well known for the classical music that he was good at. He composed most music in the earlier 1700s that majorly focused on classical styles (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). He can be viewed as one of the composers who introduced the classical music at an era when such kind of music was not very much appreciated since they were not based on the actual events such as spiritual and religious ceremonies that were common in that era (Smith 2005). Mozart is therefore viewed as the modern musician due to his advancement of the classical music that is still influential even in the modern era. His kind of music can be linked to the current rock music which is considered by many musicians to be having certain connections to the old Mozart classical music composers. These connections are also related to the old styles of using both organs and the violins that are still used even in the today's society of modernized classical music.
Other composers of classical music era also included Frank Joseph, Willbald Gluck, Rossini and Schubert who were composers of late 1790s and 1820s. During this era entertainment was considered more important than the expressions of feelings, cultures and the religion that were the main purposes of music in the previous eras (Smith 2005). This period was majorly characterized with many composers unlike in the previous eras due to advancement in technology as well as the ability of the composers to link their instrumentation to the music composed thereby coming up with a rhythm that was very good for entertaining their audiences. This period however was not purely focused like the previous periods since other composers like the Beethoven and Hoyden Joseph composed certain music that were more of romantic and this led to the romantic era of music.
