NOLA history: Mardi Gras Parades
There are many facets to the Carnival celebration in New Orleans, from King Cakes to the Bal Masque, to the debauchery of the Vieux Carre on Carnival Day. But for most New Orleanians, Mardi Gras memories come from parades.

Carnival's roots go back into the Middle Ages. The first "official" Mardi Gras celebration took place in 1833. Bernard Mandeville de Marigny, a wealthy landowner (and namesake of the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood) sponsored a "creole-style" celebration supervised by city officials. Even though the celebrations were now "official," they were still quite disorganized and rowdy. In 20 years, the appeals to abolish public Mardi Gras celebrations were renewed.

In 1856, six Anglo-American transplants from Mobile formed a secret society they named the Mistick Krewe of Comus. The krewe held a 2-float night parade on Mardi Gras of 1857, and the modern parade era was born. Comus shifted the focus of Mardi Gras celebrations from citizens carousing in the street to citizens passively watching a parade in the street. The change was such a success that out of town visitors began coming to New Orleans in 1858.

Comus paraded from 1857 to 1861, but suspended their celebration in 1862, because of the Civil War. By 1872, another group of businessmen decided to hold a daytime parade on Mardi Gras. They named their organization The School of Design, and the king of their parade was designated Rex, King of Carnival. Rex paraded regularly from 1872 until 1917, but Comus took a hiatus from parading from 1885 to 1890. During that period the Krewe of Proteus (founded in 1882) moved their ride from Lundi Gras (the Monday before Mardi Gras) to Comus' prestigious spot. When Comus returned to the streets in 1891, this created a bit of a conflict. The conflict was settled in 1892 and Proteus continues to parade on Lundi Gras to this day.

What was the secret that got people out into the streets to watch these parades? It's simple: the riders on the floats throw stuff to the crowd. It started with candies and bon-bons and other small food items. By the 1920s, the krewes began to throw glass beads (often imported from what is now the Czech Republic). These beads were heavy and pretty! You see strands similar to those antique Carnival throws being custom-made by artisans who sell them on sites like Etsy.com. As the imported glass beads rose in price, and krewes needed a much higher volume of stuff to throw, the krewes switched to plastic strands like in the photo above.

More krewes appeared on the scene in the first half of the Twentieth Century as more and more New Orleanians developed the income to participate in parading organizations. The post-WWII years saw a real boom in parading, as veterans returning from the war settled in the various neighborhoods of the city and wanted the opportunity to parade like the older organizations. The Krewes of Choctaw rolled in 1946, then Zulu and Mid City in 1947.
Parading exploded in the 1950s (in spite of a suspension for the Korean War in 1951), with Okeanos, Midas, Orion, Freret, and Gemini. In 1958, parades moved to the suburbs, with the krewes of Arabi (St. Bernard), Poseidon (Algiers), Zeus and Helios (both of these in Old Metairie).

At the start of the 1960s, The Rex Organization upped the ante, producing aluminum coins, called "doubloons." Within a year, other krewes followed suit, and the various doubloons were the most sought-after items thrown off the floats. The Krewe of Bacchus debuted in 1969, marking the first "super krewe" parade. Bacchus broke tradition by having a celebrity monarch and a "supper dance" rather than a bal masque.
Suburban parades continued to pop up in the 1970s as white-flight incresed the popuations of Jefferson and St. Bernard Parishes. The Krewe of Endymion, which first rolled in Gentilly in 1967, decided to raise the level of their parade to "super-krewe" by the mid-70s, giving the Saturday and Sunday before Mardi Gras incredibly large and exciting celebrations.
Krewe of Caesar, a Jefferson Parish organization formed in the 1980s.
The oil bust of the 1980s hit the metro New Orleans area hard, forcing many krewes to disband. Both the city and Jefferson Parish took the opportunity of this downsizing to structure the krewes into more "standard" routes. The city limited krewes to staging on various uptown streets, then rolling down St. Charles Avenue to Canal Street, parading both sides of Canal and disbanding by the river. The exceptions to this basic route is Endymion. Endymion starts by City Park, going down Orleans Avenue to Canal, then Canal to St. Charles, making its way to Lee Circle, then to the Louisiana Superdome.
Carnival parading expanded from the tri-parish metro area into the outlying parishes as the area grew, so there are now quality parades on the Northshore and as far away as Houma.

While the African-American community always had its "Mardi Gras Indian" celebrations, blacks who belonged to the Tramps Social Aid and Pleasure Club began a vaudeville-style parade mocking white society in 1910. Instead of throwing food items, the Tramps threw gold-painted walnuts. That tradition evolved to the now-world-famous "Mardi Gras Coconut" thrown by Zulu. While there are references to the Tramps dating back to 1901, they incorporated in 1910. The SA&P changed their name to Zulu in 1916. Zulu hosted the city's true celebrity monarch when jazz musician Louis Armstrong, Jr., reigned as Zulu The King in 1949. Zulu had its ups and downs until the 1980s. Municipal government, with black mayors and a majority-black city council elevated Zulu to an almost-equals status with Rex and Comus. Zulu rolls from S. Claiborne and Jackson at 8am on Mardi Gras, getting to Gallier Hall to toast the Mayor and other dignitaries before Rex.

While there were calls from many parts of the community to not hold a Carnival celebration in 2006 because of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleanians would have none of it. Krewes and spectators alike took to the streets, giving us all a chance to heal. With the metro area on the mend, Carnival krewes are as well, as we now move forward!
Happy Mardi Gras!

The evidences of genocide of 10000 Uzbeks in Kyrgyzstan on June 2010 – the worst human rights tragedy of XXI century
THE GENOCIDE OF UZBEKS IN OSH AND JALAL-ABAD ON JUNE 2010 AND HOW LONG WORLD GOING TO OBSERVE EXTERMINATION OF WHOLE ETHNICITY IN KYRGYZSTAN IN HUMAN RIGHTS ERA
The true picture of ethnic violence from unbiased observer being in Osh in the time of attacks
First of all lets define who was historically living in Southern Kyrgyzstan make retrospection to some 40 years ago, and even to the time before the Soviet Union period. If you see historical photographs before 1970, you cant find any Kyrgyz people in Osh and Jalal-Abad. Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken regions of southern Kyrgyzstan historically was populated by Uzbeks and their antecedents. The traditional residence of Kyrgyzs was Enisey – currently Krasnoyarskiy Kray of Russia when under pressure of Cossacks they moved to the Tien Shan Mountains where nomadic life brought them to the mountains close to the Fergana Valley. Under the Soviet Union times population of Kyrgyz was extremely low to form a republic and was always under move in mountains so-called "Jayloo". Since nomadic life and not obeying the soviet laws present a problem to USSR, by proposal of Chairman of presidium of Supreme Soviet Board of Uzbek SSR - Yuldash Ahunbabaev and by decision of Supreme Secretary of Soviet Union, regions of historical living of Uzbeks in December 1936 has been given to newly founded Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic which is southern Kyrgyzstan now. Complaints of innumerable Uzbeks remain unheard.
Many experts say, that this division knowingly made by Soviet Union in order to necessitate involvement of big brother Russia in problem solving. After that event Kyrgyzs became gradual political, regional and cultural attacks to Uzbeks. Violence against Uzbeks has permanent character aimed getting rid of nation differing by higher culture and diligence. Unbearable pressures in any sphere and hidden extermination of Uzbeks, in every twenty years following by massive genocide aimed to taking away land and property of victims.
The answer to the vital question who started the attacks on June 2010, presently is clear and confirmed by many victims. It is simultaneous massive armed attacks by all Kyrgyz gangster-criminal groups to Uzbeks regions on cars in night June 10, 2010. The names and ringleaders of first attacks was precisely given by Abdufattah Mannapov in his article "The reason of Osh genocide..." they are disguised under different sport clubs and long ago dealing with extortion and terror of Uzbeks and other minorities. There are: 1. Kickboxing Club which have some hundred of gangsters (head of gang Kursant Asanov). 2. Club "Muhammad Umar", about 500 gangsters (the ringleader Ulug, officer of SOBR (SWAT). 3. Club "Taimash", more than five hundred gangsters (the ringleader of gang Shailoo Utazov). 4. The gang "Cherniy Ment" (Black Militiamen), about eight hundred gangsters (the ringleader the "thief in law" Kamchi Kulubaev). 5. Gang "Almanbet", some hundred of gangsters (the ringleader "thief in law" Almanbet). 6. Gang "Jango", more than two hundred gangsters (the head of gang, the (polozhenec) previous leader of prison" Kadyr). The main ringleader and coordinator of these gangs-units was the mayor of Osh, called with nickname "Narkobaron" (drug dealer) and Cannibal – Melis Mirzaakmatov.
Before the attacks Kyrgyzs made organized actions to provoke Uzbeks to the conflict, specifically attacks to Uzbeks in railroad station, killing of Uzbeks youth near Farkhad Chaikhana, attack to Uzbeks in casino and cafes which all happened on June 6-9, 2010. The night hunt ride on June 10, 2010 resulted in shoot dead of hundreds of Uzbeks, most of them was 14 - 18 years old. This resulted in gathering of Uzbeks near "Alay" hotel. Noted ride attacks of Kyrgyz gangs was aimed to force Uzbeks to go to the streets in order to openly kill them all, by thousands of upcoming village looters. They know from police data that Uzbeks generally had no gunfire weapons. That time many thousands of armed Kyrgyz mobs from was already coming to the Osh for killing and looting Uzbeks. The Alay and Chon Alay mobs was guided by general Ismail Isakov, Jalal-Abad mobs by Azimbek Beknazarov and Kamchibek Tashiev, Nookat and Papan mobs by Osh Mayor Melis Mirzaakmatov. In order mobilize all Kyrgyzs to the attacks Osh city Mayor gathered Osh prostitutes, killed them and send to villages saying that Uzbeks are raping and killing Kyrgyz students in dormitory of Osh State University. Some people who refused to come, his gangs are demonstratively shoot. He is also spread rumors that Alay hotel is burning by Uzbeks riots and called to kill and take all property of Uzbeks. Many thousands of Kyrgyzs started to take buses and come to the Osh. Alay hotel to that time and now is staying untouched and even the huge gas station belong to Kyrgyz rich people is located inside Uzbek regions remain untouched. Later Kyrgyz human rights defender Aziza Abdirasulova confess that they couldn't find raped and killed students in that dormitory. In order to justify the violence Kyrgyz gangs was ready to modest victims from they side, but Uzbeks refrain from massive destruction's and only defend themselves in order to prove the world that they are victims, not attackers as has it always been and hope it wasnt useless.
From June 10 during the 8 days from gradually coming Kyrgyz mobs almost every Uzbek region was attacked and burned. There are Frunzenskiy, Cheremushki, Zainabedinova, Dom-Byta, Furkat, Majrim-Tal, Turan, Otuz-Adyr, On-Adyr, HBK, Yugo-Vostok, Tuleiken, Shahid-Tepa, Shark, Stalin, Kenesh, Uchar, Japalak, Nariman, as well as Jalal-Abad city and region. All these regions have more than half million of Uzbeks. Its hard to describe all horror of Kyrgyzs' carnage and barbarism. Kyrgyz mobs after shooting Uzbeks was cutting they throats, chop off heads and burned. Uzbeks whom Kyrgyz mobs captures alive was tortured and killed by knotted eyes, ripped belly, cutting nosed and ears, lot of body fractions was later found in Ak-Buura river. Uzbeks woman and girls they gang-raped cutting breasts, pricking eyes, shaving hair and eyebrows and burning faces. Kyrgyz police and Kyrgyz people kidnapped and tortured lot of Uzbeks for ransom. For most of them they were getting ransom and giving to the relatives dying from hard beatings Uzbeks. The Uzbek woman I knew paid ransom and received the body or killed 12 years old son (thats usual Kyrgyz contemptible humor).
The Kyrgyz police was shooting and killing all Uzbek in the streets. Soldiers was opening barricades for riots to the Uzbek regions by shooting from cannons of armed carriers and grenade launchers. Majority of Uzbeks was shoot dead right on the entrance to they living regions. You can see the videos in internet of Osh events where Kyrgyz soldiers in armed carrier moving with sitting together Kyrgyz riots. The noted in press loose of Tommy-guns and ammunition by soldiers is the lie, they trying to convince the world. Soldiers by order of general Isakov organized free distribution of guns to all Kyrgyzs wanted to kill Uzbeks.
All Kyrgyz mobs was operated by one scenario: The first mob with help of police and soldiers was shooting and killing protecting Uzbeks. The second mobs after that was stealing Uzbek cars and loading looted goods from houses and sending to the villages. The third mob was burned all houses where lot of hiding woman and children were inside. Later they even had no problem with wearing clothes of murdered people. In 10 days after starting the attacks, Kyrgyz villages was bound by looted Uzbeks goods, life goods and cars. All refrigerators was collected in one places, since Osh mayor promised to give land of Uzbeks in Osh and free refrigerators to all Kyrgyz men participated in attacks.
Even in entering the curfew armed Kyrgyzs was freely moving in the city, but moving Uzbeks even refugees soldiers shoot, rape or detain for ransom. Kyrgyzs were attacking and shooting Uzbeks who were mostly armed by sticks and stones. But Osh mayor not recommended to Uzbeks touch Kyrgyzs, warning that "For every killed Uzbek we will kill ten Uzbeks". There was the whole fields of killed Uzbeks, the mountains of dead Uzbeks whom soldiers was burning in order to hide the real number of victims. If count the number of Uzbeks who was burred, tortured to death or disappear from June 10 to August 10, you will count more than 10000. And that is the issue which Kimmo Kiljunen on behalf of international Commission on Investigation of June events should draw his attention. The Kyrgyz will do everything in order to not letting this information reach to the public, as well as they did everything for not entering the OSCE police to the Kyrgyzstan which may interrupt the Kyrgyzs business on human lives.
Kyrgyz authorities trying to diminish the results of attacks and mislead the world contending that attacks are made by Uzbeks. The truth is obvious from simple fact that from 889 burned houses 99% are houses of Uzbeks. The lie of Kyrgyz officials about hundred of killed Kyrgyzs can be easily detected by following fact. After the June 20 Kyrgyz officials widely broadcast by national TV and published in public newspapers photos of 39 dead Kyrgyzs. Would you think that if Kyrgyzs had more victims, they would not publish them? Majority of these people later was found in different parts of Kyrgyzstan because after committing hard crimes they had to hide some time. The most tragic fact is that besides of these declared Kyrgyz victims, all victims are Uzbeks. Kyrgyzs proudly posting in internet they pictures with Kalashnokova automats saying that they planned to kill ten thousand but in fact even killed more. Kyrgyz officials knowing that nobody will believe them about quantity of murdered presenting this fake data through the human right defenders (e.g. Aziza Abdurasulova and the like) who are in ethnic issues only Kyrgyz defenders. Even Kyrgyzstan Ombudsman Tursunbek Akun being Kyrgyz ethnicity was trying to hide the obvious facts and accused Uzbeks itself in attacks. He dont want to answer to the simple question of how that killed Kyrgyzs during the attacks appeared in Uzbek regions with guns, being habitants of mountain villages? How about 200000 Uzbek refugees to the border of Uzbekistan. Maybe he'll say that they decided to take vacation tour?
On June, July and August Kyrgyzs police are started to detaining and imprisonment of all remaining Uzbeks directly and through the police with soldiers rides which they officially call "Cleansing". Kyrgyz police was entering into houses of Uzbeks boldly saying that the guns and ammunition they hold was found in your house. Many thousands of detained Uzbeks was tortured and killed in police offices all the time and its ongoing even now. Only Uzbeks were appearing in courts under fake accusations and most of them received imprisonment for life. Among them are known Uzbek human rights defender Azimzhan Askarov.
After all of this facts is there a single doubt can be in question weather its a "Genocide", or ethnic clashes like which is trying to present it Kyrgyz government. How UN cant notice many thousands of photos and video of tortured and killed Uzbeks in Kyrgyzstan in internet even on youtube. What UN bodies for the children protection is still calm when in Cheremushki Kyrgyzs was burning Uzbek children in they own housed and throwing Uzbeks toddlers from their apartments in tall rise buildings? In the period of ethnic cleansing in cellars of Kyrgyz Drama Theater Kyrgyz police was always keeping and fulfilling more than 500 Uzbeks, torturing them for ransom of at least ten thousand dollars and killing them all the time.
Kyrgyz against any other ethnicity, but against Uzbeks they have special cruelty. They burned "Babur" Uzbek theater, broken the monument of Uzbek poet Alisher Navoyi, burned private Uzbeks University with trivial name "University of Friendship of Nations". You may be ask, why so many Uzbek elements can be in Kyrgyzstan? The answer is obvious, because this was the region of historical residence of Uzbeks and Uzbeks specifics is working hard and creating something new all the time, where nature of Kyrgyzs is only to seize and destroy. About what do you think is saying the fact that in oldest cemetery of Osh under the Suleiman Mountain buried only Uzbeks. Why there is no Kyrgyz with Osh birth certificate older than 1970. And why old passports of Uzbeks born before 1950 is notes: Osh town, Fergana Valley, Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic?
Osh public authorities are making tour for every foreign expert to the Kyrgyz fake camps where ostensibly the victims are located. The picture is great, but all these victims are family members of habitants of Kyrgyz mountain villages who have they own homes in villages and came to Osh for robbery and looting. All of them now receiving apartments from newly build houses for victims of ethnic conflict. Uzbeks will never live in these built houses because dont want to be killed by drunk Kyrgyzs came at a night.
The relationship of Kyrgyz officials with Uzbeks are simple. President Otunbaeva before ethnic attacks in May 2010 met Uzbek leader Kadyrzhan Batyrov in Jalal-Abad and asked him for help to restrain of remaining gangs of former president Kurmanbek Bakiev. Paying they own lives and trying to receive equal attitude from new government Uzbeks banish Bakievs gangs from seizured Jalal-Abad Public Administration Building. After that president Otunbaeva betray him. Situation after April revolution was is such condition that so many forces were willing to come to the power after April revolutions. Also appeared some facts that in April unrest, sniper shootings which kill protectors was coming from other side rather than White House. Transitional government have seen that they can loose the power and connecting with south Kyrgyz leaders authorized June ethnic attacks giving to the south Kyrgyzs what they wanted, the property and life's of Uzbeks. After June ethnic events the full control in country return to president and transitional government as well as attention from political issues changed to the Osh events. President Otunbaeva on June 12 took active participation in genocide of Uzbeks by issuing two Decrees: 1) "Permitting usage of fighting weapons to defeat by enforcement bodies". 2) "On founding of voluntary people retinue". By this decision she is practically legalized the process of distribution of military guns and mobilizing Kyrgyz from all of the country to kill Uzbeks . With regarding this decrees they concern expressed the human right organizations Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and others.
Uzbeks on June 2010 wasn't required an autonomy, but social justice for them. Although it is nothing wrong if in a state with 4.5 million people 1 million of which is Uzbeks, have an autonomy. Before the conflict Uzbeks of Kyrgyzstan didn't require political preference (presence in parliament, state regime to the Kyrgyz language) although they have right to be so, but just a protection to normal live and work what they hadn't. The most dangerous thing which Uzbeks did against Kyrgyz govern is occasional refuse to pay exploitative bribes. All Uzbeks paid taxes, bribes and checking payments feeding Kyrgyzs helping them to build they wealth.
Concerning attacks to Uzbeks United States limited themselves by modest protests from its Embassy in Bishkek which Kyrgyz as nation used to ignore all the time. US neglect the greatest human rights violation of XXI century – the genocide of Uzbeks choosing to not threaten its immediate relations with Kyrgyz officials, specifically in order to save US transit center in Manas airport. The President Medvedev said that CSTO didn't made any fatal errors in Kyrgyzstan implying June ethnic attacks. The truth is they CSTO and Russia did nothing to prevent the conflict even when Otunbaeva for "pro forma" officially asked for help. The reason of such decision is laid on personal conflict between Vladimir Putin and Islam Karimov. By its inactivity the Russia gave a lesson to Uzbekistan who think itself too independent. Its not a secret that relations of Uzbekistan and Russian is always difficult due to boycotting behavior of Uzbekistan in CIS treaties and bilateral agreements. The decision to refuse to conflict settlement consider Russian experts consider as lost change to growth they presence in Central Asia as well as mistake of not mature Medvedev, who delving in law not good in policy.
In relation to Uzbek minorities there is no trust to Kyrgyz media and NGOs who are consciously or unconsciously following governments nazi policy. The position of government, police, army and even human rights defenders are one – anti-minority, and specifically have distinctive Anti-Uzbek character unseasoned by any threat from Uzbeks. This shown again that no internal justice cant be reached in this matter but only external by U.N. Measures.
No matter to immense pledges with evidences sent from victims of violence and indisputable facts in internet and world media, UN failed to take appropriate measures to protect Uzbek minorities. Most of humanitarian aid they gave was received by Kyrgyzs. In the period of attacks Kyrgyz looting Uzbeks property was also receiving UN food and medicines. Sufficient part of humanitarian aid sent to Osh was taken by Osh mayor to support his personal armed troops which is more than 600. Kyrgyz police, army and village looters consisting 100% of Kyrgyz was against Uzbeks and government is hiding the real number of victims which quantity different public sources give differently. Despite of fact that vast majority of victims was Uzbeks and almost all destroyed objects was belong to Uzbeks, UN even not recognized this act as a "genocide".
Currently Kyrgyzs gangs with weapons conducting massive seizure of property of Uzbeks in southern Kyrgyzstan. As it was described in recently published information in www.centrasia.ru, Kyrgyzs through the gangs in violently and openly seizures of property of Uzbeks in southern Kyrgyztan. In Osh these are gangs of Almanbet Anapiyaev and Aidos Aytbaev. In Nookat they are gangs of are Altyn Suleimanov protected by region mayor Kanchibek Saliev, and militia chief Sanzhar Ibragimov. The Osh nazi mayor Melis Mirzaakmatov who have hundreds of gangs threatening and gathering payment from Uzbeks. Recently by order of mayor Kyrgyz gangs attacked the Uzbeks owner of hotel Kyrgyzstan – Kadyr Mahamazhanov. Under pressure of barbarian Ernst he defeated.
From all that ongoing processed against Uzbeks minorities which completely out of international law and human rights the following conclusions necessary to make:
Attacks to Uzbeks in hidden manner are continues, was ingoing before June ethnic cleansing and since became the principle of southern Kyrgyzs life, will never stops after. Kyrgyz public authorities and law enforcement bodies (which 100% represented by Kyrgyzs) living and enriching by robbery, detaining and torture of defenseless Uzbeks.
No reconciliation can be reached because despite of fact that Uzbeks are always ready for mercy , Kyrgyzs will no intention to stop attacks.
Despite of many million humanitarian aids Kyrgyz government not spent even a 10% of given funds for the improvement of situation in Kyrgyzstan. The aid is mostly not reaching to the Uzbek victims, most of them living in tents and destroyed houses.
Kyrgyzs are alien in Fergana valley and following they usual predatory policy to the public goods international aid and they enemy attitude to the native population, which requires external control.
All facts of ethnic cleansing in Osh and Jalal-Abad shows correspondence of June events to all characteristics of Genocide. Majority of victims are Uzbeks. Majority destroyed housed was belong to Uzbeks.
The government of Kyrgyzstan authorized attacks to Uzbeks in order to distract people from reconsidering of results of April revolution by May events and instability in Bishkek. This explains why president didnt even met Uzbeks victims, after the violence, majority accused for June events are Uzbeks and all of them receiving life-time imprisonments. If Uzbeks remain still alive from police torture until the court, Kyrgyzs are openly attacks them and they relatives during the court trials. President and new transitional government supports annihilation of Uzbeks and didnt take any measures for stopping the violence and drawing into responsibility Uzbek minorities.
The real number of Uzbek victims are more than 10000 and it is the worst human tragedy of XXI century which requires the world to take IMMEDIATE actions: First of all there are admitting June attacks as genocide and give any lawful status to Uzbeks who are not considered as human and otherwise will be completely annihilated. Return to the initial state of 1936 and restoring normal division of borders, canceling artificial division of territory by USSR. Enter the UN forces to stop the detain and seizure of Uzbeks property. The outcomes of remaining inactive to this problem can influence on complete extermination of Uzbeks, revenge reaction of Uzbekistan after changing they restricting power, coming Islamic extremist groups and total destabilization of all Central Asia.
Is it the fact that UN and international community are ready to admit in era of human rights? How long we going to observe the complete terminations of minority Uzbeks in they native land?

- Grilled meats have fewer calories than fried meats. Much of the fat burns away as meat grills, whereas frying adds calories from the oils and breading.
- Consider bird burgers instead of hamburgers. Burgers made from ground turkey have the same number of calories but half the fat. Ground chicken burgers are also low in fat with 30 to 50 fewer calories. If you stick with ground beef, make sure it is learn (90% ground beef or higher) to cut those calories.
- Dress your meat with low-calorie toppings. Replace high-calorie toppings like cheese and mayo with fancy mustard, hot sauce or salsa. A distinctive, delicious burger with French mustard, soy sauce, salsa and meats named after the German cities of Hamburg and Frankfurt—what could be more All-American than that?
- Have something crispy or crunchy with your sandwich…like vegetables. Instead of French fries or potato chips, reach for crispy carrots, celery or cucumbers. Top these fresh vegetables with healthy, low-calorie dressings like salsa or hummus.
- Free yourself from the food table. Center your celebration on family and activities and spend less time around the food. Take small portions of food, and don't go back for seconds. If you are going drink alcohol, nurse your drink and consume less. "It's a good way to be part of the social situation without putting your diet in danger," says Gates.
