Origin and history of Trade Unions
A trade union is exactly what its name suggests - it is a union of people for the sake of their trade. In other words, it is an organization of workers in order to achieve certain common goals like increment of wages, better working conditions, etc.
The history of labor union dates back to the guild system that started in Europe, this system aimed to protect selected professions by controlling of advancement and skill mastery. This is how unions came into existence, and is the first example of how numerous workers join together to create their own rules instead of following those set by their employers.
A great demand for new workers to join the job market was triggered by the eighteenth century's industrial revolution in Europe. In the US in earlier times the trade unions and workers played a very important part in striving for their independence. They introduced physical efforts as well as ideas and although the former were not useful or successful, the latter remained in the American Culture and are still followed to this day.
It was only in the nineteenth century that the union became hugely popular after the founding of the National Labor Union, which is the very first national union. This union was formed in the year 1866 and it was open for all kinds of workers. Unfortunately, this union wasn't successful and was dissolved shortly and all that remains in the history is its foundation. Later on in the year 1869, the Knights of Labor was created and it was this union opposed child labor and promoted the idea of working for eight hours a day. It was so successful that the membership zoomed up to a staggering 700,000 members!
And that is how trade unions came into existence. It all started as a great idea and became what we see it today. Although the agendas of today's union might have changed, but the ideals and aims more or less remains the same.

Bringing Back Discouraged Workers in the Labor Market
In psychology, one's desire to pursue passion and interest is affected by the presence of opportunities. In the corporate field, oftentimes those who get their desired work at the earlier period of job hunting are most likely to follow their career path. On the other hand, those who wait for a period of time have a tendency look for other options apart from their chosen field. On a macroeconomic perspective, the labor market also faces the same dilemma.
Nowadays, the local workforce is flooded with "discouraged" workers. Technically, discouraged workers are people who have the capacity, skill, and educational credentials to acquire employment in various industries, but lack the desire to pursue employment.
There are several factors that cause discouragement. The inability to find employment after applying in various companies is one of the causes for discouraged workers. Rejection pulls down one's self-esteem and confidence. The feeling of rejection after being turned down in job interviews smudges hopes for future occupations. Consequently, fear of rejection hinders attempts for employment.
Mismatched skills to company qualifications also lead to discouragement. There are instances when a person wants to fill in the position in a company vacancy, but lacks the required educational degree. For instance, advertising agencies require applicants and workers (compensation claim management in this industry is low) in their creative team to have a degree in communications for the development of media campaigns. Labor agencies in some countries issue a list of high-demand jobs to colleges and universities to remedy discouragement brought by skill mismatch.
In Western countries, racial discrimination may have already been a passé, but this is one of the factors that discourage workers from searching for employment. In the 1920's, discrimination against Black American workers (compensation claims management between Black and White americans also vary) became very rampant. This discouraged many skilled Blacks to search for a viable employment. Nevertheless, this issue has already been solved by labor policies supporting Affirmative Action.
The present breakdown of the labor market in the United States, Canada and Australia can be remedied if discouraged workers (compensation claims management is also an issue for workers) will be brought back in the work arena. Governments in these countries are already creating policies to lessen employment discouragement.

ABSTRACT
A study to assess the knowledge of Industrial workers regarding physical and chemical hazards in a selected steel industry at Salem district.
Prevention is key, but early intervention can improve the outcomes. The global strategy health for all moves towards occupational care which can be possible only by encouraging the workers participation in health safety measures. Mobilization of resources and using appropriate technology for reducing the morbidity and mortality among the workers due to occupational hazards [Journal of occupational hazards 2000]
OBJ E CTIVES OF THE STUDY
- To assess the knowledge of workers regarding physical and chemical hazards.
- To identify the utilization of safety measures among workers.
- To determine the relationship between the levels of knowledge with selected Socio demographic variables age, years of experience, participation in in-service educational program.
- To find out the relationship between the knowledge of workers and utilization of safety measures.
- To identify the health problem of the workers during the data collection.
- To prepare the health education booklet regarding physical, chemical hazards and safety measures to prevent physical and chemical hazards.
The conceptual framework adopted for the study was modified pender's health promotion model.
The research design approach adopted the study was descriptive in nature.Sixty workers were selected for the study from selected steel industry of Salem District.The selection of workers was done by simple random sampling method and the data was collected from sixty workers of selected steel industry by semi structured questionnaire.
Content validity of the tool was obtained from seven experts in the field of community health nursing, community medicine, medical surgical nursing occupational nursing and occupational medicine. The reliability of the tool was established by split half technique and spearman's brown formula, with r = 0.95 for knowledge test.
The collected data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics in terms of frequencies, percentage, mean, standard deviation and chi- square test.
In the area of physical hazards, the mean score percentage of physical hazards is 43%,heat 41.3% and noise 30% and Ionizing radiation is about 50% and overall mean score percentage is about 46%. Its shows that knowledge level of workers regarding physical hazards below average.
In the area of chemical hazards, the mean score percentage of chemical used in industry is about 92% and common means of chemicals enter into human body is 40% and diseases occur due to inhalation of chemicals is48% and injection of chemical is 43% and percutaneous absorption of chemical is 32% and occupation dermatitis 43% and symptom of metal poisoning is 37% and pneumoconiosis is 45%. The overall mean score percentage of chemical hazards is about 56%. This shows that workers have average knowledge regarding chemical while comparing to physical hazards the workers have more knowledge regarding chemical hazards in Salem steel plant. Because they are using chemicals for the process of increase the strength of steel.
In the area of usage of safety measures meaning and types of safety measures is 49% and head protection 77%, eye and face protection 52.5%, respiratory protection 43% and body protection is about 46%. The overall mean score percentage of safety measures is about 50%. It shows that workers have average knowledge regarding safety measures.
The present study reveals knowledge of workers regarding physical hazards is associated or influenced by the socio demographic variables of the workers such as educational qualification, experience and participation in in-service educational programme and not associated with age of the workers.
The present study reveals knowledge of workers regarding chemical hazards is significant relationship with socio demographic variables like age. experience, educational qualification and participation in in-service programme..
The present study reveals knowledge of workers regarding safety measures associated with, Experience and participation in in-service programme and workers have significant relationship with educational qualification with knowledge score that is found through chi-square analysis and age not associated with age of the workers.
Present study reveals that positive degree of correlation between the age of physical, chemical hazards with utilization of safety measures.This study reveals that positive degree of correlation between knowledge of and chemical hazards with utilization of safety measures.
BASED ON THE PRESENT STUDY THE FOLLOWING
RECCOMENDATIONS ARE MADE
- A quasi experimental study can be done to evaluate the effect education for industrial workers regarding physical and chemical hazards.
- Comparative study may be conducted with industrial workers working in small and large scale industry.
- A study may be conducted in the area of mechanical and psychological hazards
An information booklet was developed for the workers regarding the physical and chemical hazards and utilization of safety measures to prevent the hazards

Trade Unions - history And Types
Trade unions are essentially associations or organization brought together by labor workers to achieve their demands of better conditions at their work atmosphere. In the US, trade unions go by the name labor unions. These unions exist to deal with problems faced by laborers, these problems maybe of any nature such as those concerning the pay, unfair work rules, timings and so on. All the workers working under one particular employer is represented by the worker's union. All the communication that happens in between the employer and the workforce generally takes place through the union.
Unions of this personality are supposed to have originated in the 18th century which was the period of one of the major industrial revolutions that has ever taken place. The prominent influences that played an important role in building up workers unions were the socialist and democratic parties in the European countries like France and Germany.
At around the same time that is in 1850's and the 1860's New Model Unions in the United Kingdom were getting very popular. The trade union movement was gaining momentum all around Europe, the United Kingdom and the US. The movement became its most exciting peak in America when The Mechanic's Union Trade Association was founded in 1827. This major movement comprised of individuals who had similar ideologies about the problems concerning the common working class, which ever labor they were involved in.
The movement resulted in the publication of several books and several smaller organizations that worked with the same spirit for similar demands and principles.
Trade unions now are of mainly 4 types:
- Craft union- They stand for skilled laborers that work in a particular sector or are employed in a particular craft. These unions are also called as horizontal unions. For example carpenters union.
- Industrial unions- they represent the workers trading in an industry. All the workers in that industry, not considering which occupation or which job comes under that industry's union.
- General unions- general unions represent laborers from all industries and professions irrespective of what sector of the workforce they come from.
- White collar unions- they stand for professionals who work from an office such as those who occupy a managerial or administrative chair.
Generally trade unions prefer peaceful methods for achieving their demands, but they can also go to extends of indefinite strikes and such practices.

What is the first picture that comes to your mind when you think of the construction worker? Invariably, it is an image of a rugged man with tools, strong hands, wearing a helmet and perched precariously on top of a high rise being constructed! Yes, the construction worker has been stereotyped a lot, but is it all that a construction worker does or can do? There are some myths to be busted about construction worker jobs and getting one.
• Most of the construction workers are prone to grievous injuries: Not always does a construction worker sit at the top of a skyscraper busy bolting and welding joints. Yes, they do but today the safety aspect has gone up tremendously. At least some claim the job to be better than sitting at the computer and spoiling your eyesight in the bargain! Debates apart, if all safety measures are followed, there is little chance that the construction worker is exposed to a dangerous situation at all!
• Worker exploitation is more: With the amount of physical labor going in, one might very well think that construction workers are an exploited workforce. • It is not fit for the fairer sex: Maybe the fairer sex cannot contribute by holding the liquid concrete pipe, but they can sometimes be an asset to the organization by giving important inputs on the design and simulation front!
• A cubicle job is any day better than an on-site job: Not if you consider the lifestyle problems that come with a cubicle job. At least, the workers don't complain of drug abuse, extended working hours, too much job pressure, obesity and other similar diseases.
• You don't need much education to enter a construction job: This is completely baseless. As much as a software market requires a Masters candidate, so does the construction job. In fact sometimes more because there you're not working on simulations but real brick and mortar! And a little mistake can pull down a whole building!
• Construction jobs offer the least security: Developing countries are further creating more jobs than ever, owing to their need for infrastructure development. Construction jobs are at an all time high and there is a huge need for manpower in this field quite contrary to what many think. Work might not go on forever at construction site but that does not mean that with a project completion, the termination of a worker is obvious. In fact, if you're with a firm, you can continue to work at places where the firm has been awarded contracts.
