Frank Sinatra Epitome of American Popular Music

Frank Sinatra is the epitome of American popular music and the recording artist is mentioned in the same line of standards as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. The Sinatra myth was constructed around the "American dream" of a successful career, popularity and money, even though he was born into a poor family of Sicilian immigrants. Even as a young professional he had a brush with the stage, once it was his own jazz quartet the Hoboken Four, another in a successful New York orchestra that he performed together with Harry James (in 1939). Sinatra won the greatest popularity in the 40s.

As the singer in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (1940-42), his songs dominated on the American charts. The brilliant career of the handsome Francis Sinatra was "piloted" (which was never confirmed) by the Sicilian family members. "Mafioso Sinatra" as a singer was called in the New York tabloid newspaper, placed a dozen or so hits on different popularity charts, such as the hit "I'll Never Smile Again" that many weeks was number 1 on the weekly "Billboard" charts.

Sinatra's radio program "Hit Parade" was the most popular broadcast in the U.S. during the war. When U.S. soldiers returned to their homes, the sweet music of Sinatra has lost its patriotic expression, but despite that, a dozen new songs appeared on bestseller lists.

Speculation about mafia connections and control of the Sicilian family, resulted, during the late 40's, in the collapse of the career of Frank Sinatra. The contract with Capitol Records and the working relationship with jazz big band led by Nelson Riddle was terminated and his style of music and differently and in a more negative light.

Sinatra recorded a lot, performed in a lot of concerts and had given film a try (ex. "Guys and Doll" 1955, "High Society", 1956, "Can-Can", 1960, The Man with the Golden Arms", 1955). Although Sinatra's songs no longer occurred in droves on the charts, he was still recognized as a great singer.

Big hit songs became "Strangers in the Night," "Granada," "Something Stupid" (recorded with his daughter Nancy) and Paul Anka's standard "My Way" (122 weeks on the Billboard charts). An extensive discography included dozens of Sinatra's albums from the mawkish, banal hits, the orchestras of Harry James, the ballad standards to the commercial hits. A perfect example of the universality of his music is the Sinatra album "Frank Sinatra & Sextet-Live in Paris", a concert recording from 1962, during which the singer sings, perfectly his greatest hits: "Chicago", "Imagination", "Moonlight In Vermont", "My Funny Valentine", "Night and Day" and "I've Got You Under My Skin".

It was actually the hit "I've Got You Under My Skin" that was the beginning of a chapter in Sinatra's career, because that song created the idea to do a duet and that is how the very successful "Duets" and "Duets 2" albums were created. It was because of one song that he was able to invite to Bono - the lead singer of the rock band U2, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Charles Aznavour, Lisa Minnelli, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Bette Meddler and Diana Ross to sing in duets with Sinatra.

Francis Albert Sinatra was born on December 12, 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey, and died on May 14, 1998 in Los Angeles. He was, without a doubt one of the best singers in the world, an absolute superstar of music and film. Although his career on several occasions was met with difficulties and collapses, it was already in the middle of his long career when he was becoming a living legend.

His work is divided into several time periods, corresponding to the record companies, that he was a part of (Columbia, Capitol, Reprise, Qwest and Capitol again). Together with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and other fellow celebrities, he had created the legendary Rat Pack - a group of friends appearing together on stage (especially in Vegas), in films, playing together and practicing together (they also gambled together).

Sinatra is known as a pop artist, but the vast majority of his work is dominated by jazz and swing. He sang songs that were sometimes later reinterpreted by other great artists, such as "My Way", "Strangers in the Night", "Fly Me to the Moon" and "I've Got You Under My Skin". Frank was also an excellent actor an Oscar winner.

He sang almost to the end of his life, though his voice was getting weaker, and the lyrics had to be shown on a teleprompter. His death was a huge event in the U.S. that created a void in the music industry and brought many fans to tears.

On Sinatra's death, something amazing happened - in Las Vegas, all the lights extinguished, as a sign that the king left the city. Also in New York City the Empire State Building lit a blue color (referring to the nickname Sinatra - "Ol 'Blue Eyes").

Sinatra had many nicknames, but most of its position as a lead singer says the nickname "The Voice" - which simply means "voice".

According to legend, Sinatra for much of his life carried, in his pocket a handful of small coins. This started with the kidnapping of his son, when the hijackers ordered that contact be only through telephone booths (requiring coins). Despite the arrest of the kidnappers he still always had coins with him.

Sinatra knew personally almost all the U.S. presidents that held office during his life.

As one of his friends, Sammy Davis Jr. was black; Sinatra worked (and largely succeeded) on the abolition of racial segregation in hotels and casinos in the state of Nevada.

Throughout his life, Sinatra was associated with having contacts with the Mafia, even according to some he was the figurehead Johnny Fontane in The Godfather movies. But no one was ever able to prove these allegations or even display concrete evidence.

The last studio albums that Sinatra released were two of the "Duets" series. On these albums he sings with artists such as U2's Bono, Barbara Streisand, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin and Julio Iglesias.

Sinatra died surrounded by his family. His last words were: "I'm losing" ("I'm down").

According to legend, Sinatra was buried with the flask of Jack Daniels and a handful of coins.

He had three wives; one of them was the actress Mia Farrow.

It is difficult to assess the number of CDs recorded and released by Sinatra. Along with edits, compellations and greatest hits, this quantity must be counted in the thousands.

Sinatra and his big hit "My Way" created the popular "Sinatra doctrine". It talked about leaving the freedom of the former republics of the USSR ("My Way" - "my way").

Today's "Ocean's" movie series is a remake of the movie with Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack of the 60s.

The tombstone bears the title of Sinatra, one of his songs - "The Best Is Yet to Come" ("The best still ahead of me"). It is also the last song he has done publicly (three years before his death).

He was nervous and despotic, hated photographers, he could be ruthless to his enemies, on the other hand he was a great philanthropist, he bestowed his friends with valuable gifts, he also often selflessly helped strangers.

As one of the first stars he had his own jet.

There is a song from Sinatra's early career, which the artist sings partly in Polish.

"Ever Homeward", was many years later dug up from the archives and at the request of Sinatra played during a concert in support of Poland during the Polish martial law of 1981.

The public opinion was informed about Sinatra's death though his family. Placed on the website a statement was printed in an audio file with a very touching song, "Softly as I leave you."

patriotic song lyrics for children

Recognizing American Patriotic Music through "Yankee Doodle" & "America the Beautiful"

Patriotic music encourages feelings of national unity. They can come in the form of national songs, hymns and even military themes. Below are two examples of popular patriotic songs in the US.

"Yankee Doodle"

Who among us have not heard of this song? It s not only a popular children's song, it is also one of America's patriotic songs. As a matter of fact, it is the state song of Connecticut.

The problem with the song is that despite its popularity, there are those who scrutinize it for the way it made fun of American troops. Thus, this song still became a part of American patriotism.

We can trace the origin of this song to old English folk music. It emerged prior to the American Revolution. It is how the British mocked American soldiers. This is how the term "yankee" came about as a negative term for the americans. For "doodle", the term implies "simpleton" or "fool".

With regards to its inclusion in the American Revolution, when the Americans or "Yankees" began taking the British into the Revolution, they were also able to take command over this song. They started singing it proudly as a way to taunt English soldiers.

"America the Beautiful"

This is an American folk song that is often referred to as the national hymn of the US. This piece was adapted from Katharine Lee Bates, a Wellsely College English professor. She wrote in the year 1893 during her trip to Colorado. It mentions the beauty of the country she is traveling to. According to her, she got her inspiration from her visit to Pike's Peak.

The original version of this piece, only had four verses. After a while, they expanded it to eight verses and revised the lyrics. It was used by The Congregationalist to commemorate Independence Day in the year 1895. It was Samuel Ward, a New Jersey composer who gave music to the poem. A combination of both the poem and the music was first heard in 1910.

Though there was talk that "America the Beautiful" may replace "The Star Spangled Banner", there's no indication that this would even happen - nor if it is even considered. Still, the song projects the physical beauty and breadth of the United States.

new orleans saints

history

Main article: History of the New Orleans Saints

Early history

The brainchild of local sports entrepreneur Dave Dixon, who also founded the Louisiana Superdome and the USFL, the Saints were actually secretly born in a backroom deal brought about by Congressman Hale Boggs, Senator Russell Long and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle. The NFL needed congressional approval of the proposed AFL-NFL merger. Dixon and a local civic group had been seeking a NFL franchise for over 5 years, and had hosted record crowds to NFL exhibition games. To seal the merger, Rozelle arrived in New Orleans within a week, and announced on November 1, 1966 that the NFL officially had awarded the city of New Orleans an NFL franchise. Named for the great jazz song most identified with New Orleans "When the Saints Go Marching In," the franchise was announced in a great coincidence on November 1st, which is the Catholic All Saints' Day. Boggs' Congressional committee in turn quickly approved the NFL merger. John W. Mecom, Jr., a young oilman from Houston, became the team's first majority stockholder. The team's colors, black and gold, symbolized both Mecom's and New Orleans' strong ties to the oil ("black gold") industry.[citation needed] Trumpeter Al Hirt was part owner of the team, and his rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In" was made the official fight song.

That first season started with a 94 yard opening kickoff return for a touchdown by John Gilliam, but the Saints lost that game 2713 to the Los Angeles Rams at Tulane Stadium. Their first season record was 311, which set an NFL record for most wins by an expansion team. However, they could not manage to finish as high as second in their division until 1979. That 1979 team and the 1983 team were the only ones to even finish at .500 until 1987.

One of the franchise's shining moments came on November 8, 1970, when Tom Dempsey kicked an NFL record-breaking 63-yard field goal to defeat the Detroit Lions by a score of 1917 in the final seconds of the game. This record, although equaled 29 years later by Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos, has yet to be broken.

In 1980, the Saints lost their first 14 games, prompting local sportscaster Bernard "Buddy D" Diliberto to advise Saints supporters to wear paper bags over their heads at the team's home games; many bags rendered the club's name as the "'Aints" rather than the "Saints." The practice of wearing a bag over one's head then spread rapidly, first to fans of other poorly performing teams within the NFL, and ultimately to those of other American team sports, and has become a firmly established custom throughout the United States.

Mora era

Current Saints owner Tom Benson acquired the franchise in 1985, and hired Jim Finks as general manager and Jim Mora as head coach. That combination provided the Saints with their first-ever winning record and playoff appearance, going 123 in 1987, which had one fewer game than normal due to a players' strike. Another playoff berth would follow in 1990, and the club's first division title came in 1991. During Mora's tenure the Saints made the playoffs four times, with teams marked by strong defenses led by the "Dome Patrol" linebacking corps, but they were never able to win a playoff game. Mora coached the Saints until the middle of the 1996 season, when he stepped down halfway through a 313 season.

Ditka era

After the end of the 1996 season, ironically as Diliberto had suggested before Mora's resignation, former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka was hired to replace Mora. Although this initially generated a lot of excitement among Saints fans, Ditka's tenure ended up being a failure. The Saints went 610 in their first two seasons under Ditka (1997 and 1998). During the 1999 NFL Draft, Ditka traded all of his picks for that season, as well as the first-round and third-round picks for the following season, to the Washington Redskins in order to draft University of Texas Heisman Trophy running back Ricky Williams in the first round. Ditka and Williams had a mock wedding picture taken to commemorate the occasion. However, Ditka, most of his coaching staff, and general manager Bill Kuharich were fired at the end of the 1999 season due to the club's 313 record.

Haslett era

Jim Haslett held the post from 2000 to 2005. In his first year, he took the team to the playoffs but lost to the Minnesota Vikings a week after beating the St. Louis Rams for the team's first ever playoff win. After winning the 2000 NFL Executive of the Year Award, General Manager Randy Mueller was fired between the 2001 and 2002 seasons without explanation by Benson. The Saints failed to make the playoffs in 2001 and 2002, although in the latter year they had the distinction of beating the eventual Super Bowl XXXVII champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in both of their regular season meetings, only the second team to do so in NFL history.

In 2003, the Saints again missed the playoffs after finishing 88. The 2004 season started poorly for the Saints, as they went 24 through their first six games and 48 through their first twelve games. At that point Haslett's job appeared to be in jeopardy; however, he managed to win the three straight games leading up to the season finale, leaving the Saints in playoff contention in the final week of the season. In week 17, the Saints defeated division rivals Carolina; however, the Saints needed other results to break their way and when the St. Louis Rams beat the New York Jets the Saints were eliminated despite having beaten the Rams, who finished with the same record. The Rams, Saints, and Vikings all were 88, with the Rams having a 75 conference record, Saints 66, and the Vikings 57. The Rams received the #1 wild-card due to having the best conference record out of the 3, followed by the Vikings due to the 3316 loss handed to the Saints in Week 3. Haslett was fired after the 2005 season, in which the Saints finished 313 and did not play one regular season contest in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina. On January 17, 2006, the Saints hired Sean Payton as their new head coach.

Effect of Hurricane Katrina

Main article: Effect of Hurricane Katrina on the New Orleans Saints

Due to the damage Hurricane Katrina caused to the Superdome and the New Orleans area, the Saints' scheduled 2005 home opener against the New York Giants was moved to Giants Stadium. The remainder of their 2005 home games were split between the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, and LSU's Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Payton era

2006: Homecoming and postseason

For detailed information on the team's 2006 season, see 2006 New Orleans Saints season.

On March 23, the Saints announced that the team's two 2006 preseason games were to be played at Shreveport, Louisiana and Jackson, Mississippi.

After a $185 million renovation of the historic stadium, on April 6 the Saints released their 2006 schedule, with all home games scheduled to be played at the Superdome. On September 19, Saints owner Tom Benson announced that the team had sold out the Louisiana Superdome for the entire season with season tickets alone (70,001 seats), a first in franchise history.[citation needed]

The September 25, 2006 home opener, the first home game in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, was won by the Saints 233 against the Atlanta Falcons, who were undefeated in the 2006 season at that time. The attendance for the game was a sellout crowd of 70,003. Meanwhile, the broadcast of the game was ESPN's highest-ever rated program to date, with an 11.8 rating, and viewership by 10,850,000 homes. It was the most-watched program for the night, broadcast or cable, and was the second-highest rated cable program of all time at the time. Green Day and U2 performed "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and "The Saints Are Coming" , respectively, before the game. The game received a 2007 ESPY award for "Best Moment in Sports."

On December 17, 2006, the Saints clinched their third division title and their first NFC South title in franchise history. For the first time in Saints' history, they clinched their NFC South title on their home field. Sean Payton became the second consecutive Saints coach to win a division title in his first season. After a loss by the Dallas Cowboys to the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day 2006, the Saints clinched a first-round playoff bye for the first time in franchise history.

After the first-round bye, the Saints beat the Philadelphia Eagles 2724 in the Superdome in the 2006 Divisional Playoffs. No team had ever had such a poor record in the prior year (313) and then gone on to a league or conference championship game since the 1999 St. Louis Rams who advanced to win their first Super Bowl after being 412 the season before. Since the Saints' only previous playoff win was in the wild card round, this was the farthest the Saints had ever advanced at the time. The victory was only the second playoff win in team history.

The season ended on January 21, 2007 when the Saints lost 3914 to the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship game.

2007

Main article: 2007 New Orleans Saints season

The Saints announced that for the second year in a row, the Louisiana Superdome had sold out every ticket for the season. Additionally, all luxury boxes had been sold out for the season.[citation needed] Both of these statistics are particularly surprising given that the city-proper has about 300,000 people or 150,000 fewer people than July 2005 population data (though the metro area still accounts for 1.2 million people).[citation needed].

The first game of the season was against the defending Super Bowl XLI champion Indianapolis Colts. The Saints lost this game, 4110, and lost their next three games. In one of these three games, against the Tennessee Titans, the Saints lost running back Deuce McAllister for the season with his second career (second time in three seasons) ACL tear. After winning their first game, against the Seattle Seahawks, two weeks later, the team went on a four-game winning streak to bring their record to an even 44. After reaching 77, the Saints lost their final two games to finish 79.

2009

Main article: 2009 New Orleans Saints season

The 2009 season was the team's most successful season, which culminated in the franchise's first league championship win against the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. After becoming 130 with their win over the Atlanta Falcons, it marked the Saints' best start to a season in its franchise history. The result clinched an NFC playoff berth, a bye in the first round of the playoffs. By winning their first 13 games, the Saints also set the record for the longest undefeated season opening (130) by an NFC team since the AFLFL merger, eclipsing the previous record (120) held by the 1985 Chicago Bears. The team advanced to the 2009 NFC Championship game where they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 3128 in overtime to win their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. Television ratings for Super Bowl 44 were the highest for any TV program, sports or otherwise, in history. Since the win, two media writers have referred to the Saints as "America's Team", as their successful bid to win the Super Bowl was seen by many to represent the city's resurgence after the devastating Hurricane Katrina.

Logos and uniforms

New Orleans Saints alternate uniform: 2002 season

Except for minor modifications, the Saints' logo and uniforms have basically remained the same since the club debuted in 1967. The team's logo is a fleur-de-lis (a symbol of the City of New Orleans and of France's Bourbon monarchy), while its uniform design consists of gold helmets, gold pants, and either black or white jerseys. Minor changes to the uniform stripes and trim have been made throughout the years. The team wore black helmets during the 1969 preseason, but NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle barred the Saints from using the helmets during the regular season, since owner John Mecom, Jr. did not notify the league office of the change.

The Saints predominantly wore white at home when the club played at Tulane Stadium from 1967 through 1974 (except in 1969 and 1970), forcing opponents to wear dark colors in the subtropical climate of New Orleans. When the surface at Tulane Stadium switched from natural grass to AstroTurf in 1971, field temperatures became hotter still. In Archie Manning's first game, in the 1971 season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, temperatures on the field reached as high as 130 F (54 C). The heavily favored Rams wilted in the stifling heat, and the Saints claimed their first-ever victory over their NFC West rivals, 2420, on Manning's 1-yard quarterback sneak on the last play of the game.

The Saints switched to white pants in 1975, coinciding with the team's move from Tulane Stadium to the Superdome. One year later, they started to wear black pants with their white jerseys, a move influenced by coach Hank Stram, who introduced red pants to the Kansas City Chiefs' uniforms in 1968. In an October 3, 1976 home game against the Houston Oilers, Hank Stram used the Saints' road uniforms, the white jerseys and black pants. The Saints lost that game 3126. During the 198182 seasons (Bum Phillips' first two seasons as coach), the team wore white jerseys with black pants at home, but reverted back to the black jerseys and white pants for 1983. They reverted back to wearing gold pants with both their black and white jerseys in 1986 under new coach Jim E. Mora. From 1986 through 1995, the sleeves of the jerseys and sides of the pants featured a logo with a fleur-de-lis inside an outline of the state of Louisiana. The logo replaced the striping pattern that had been on the uniforms since the team's inception; save for color variations, the striping pattern was similar to that used by the Washington Redskins (until 1979), Green Bay Packers (until 1997), and Cleveland Browns (still in use as of 2007[update]), which is likely why the change was made. That logo was removed in 1996 and replaced with a fleur-de-lis on both the sleeves and sides of the pants.

From 1996 through 1998, the Saints returned to gold numbers on both the white and black jerseys, but complaints about the numbers on the white jerseys being too difficult to read forced the numbers on the white jerseys to be changed to black in 1999. The Saints wore black pants with a wide gold stripe with their white jerseys in 1999, but following a 313 season and the dismissal of coach Mike Ditka, the black pants were mothballed by new coach Jim Haslett.

2000s

In 2000, the Saints won their first playoff game as they hosted the St. Louis Rams and after having a better road record than home record, they wore their white jerseys, helping them get a 3128 win over the defending champion Rams. The defining play of the game came with the Saints clinging to a three-point lead with minutes to play. The Saints punted to the Rams' Az-Zahir Hakim (who would play one season for the Saints in 2005), who fumbled the punt deep in Rams' territory. Brian Milne recovered for the Saints, who then ran out the clock to preserve the victory.

In 2001, they wore their white jerseys in the first six home games. During that same year, they primarily wore black pants with both their white and black jerseys. They became the first NFL team to wear all-black uniforms in a week 5 road game against the Carolina Panthers, and again in weeks 16 and 17 in home games against the Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers.

In 2002, the Saints wore black pants with their white jerseys (except for the final road game, a 2013 loss in Cincinnati when they went back to the gold pants), and gold pants with their black jerseys, a gold alternate jersey, and a 1967-style throwback uniform. But one season later, they stopped using the alternates and again reverted back to wearing gold pants with both their black and white jerseys.

The team introduced a gold alternate jersey (worn with the black pants) during a December 15, 2002 game versus the Minnesota Vikings, a 3231 loss, but have never worn them since then. Because of the metallic gold's bright color, the gold jerseys were considered the "light" jersey in the game, so the Vikings wore their purple home jerseys as the "dark" colored team. One team must wear "dark" and one team must wear "light", the only exception being if both teams are wearing throwback uniforms, such as Thanksgiving Classic games. Today only the New England Patriots have a "light" jersey (their alternate, a bright metallic silver) that isn't white in which the other team would wear their colored, or "dark" jerseys against them since the third jersey rule was implemented in the NFL in 2002.

The Saints also introduced a 1967-style throwback uniform in a 2320 win in week 13 (December 1) against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This also was never worn again but re-introduction of the jerseys in stores suggests they may make a comeback as the Saints' alternate uniform.

In 2006, to honor their return to Louisiana, the Saints wore a patch on their uniforms with an outline of the State of Louisiana with a fleur-de-lis superimposed, similar to the logo from the 1980s.

The Saints originally planned to wear white jerseys at home for the 2006 season, but during the season, the players voted to wear the black jerseys at home after the second home game. Since the team had informed the NFL office that they planned to wear white jerseys at home, each of the Saints' remaining home opponents would have to agree to New Orleans' request. The Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cincinnati Bengals did not agree to the switch, forcing the Saints to wear white jerseys for that game.

Starting in week 13 of the 2006 season, the Saints wore white jerseys with black pants and in a Week 16 game in The Meadowlands against the New York Giants (a 307 Saints win), the Saints wore the black pants with their road white jerseys. The Saints later stuck with that combo in the NFC Championship in Chicago.

The Saints wore white jerseys for their first four home games of 2008. Three of the four games the white jerseys with black pants combination were worn at home, while the white jerseys with gold pants combination were worn for the first of those four games. The Saints chose to wear the all-black combination for the October 26 game at Wembley Stadium in London vs. the San Diego Chargers, in which New Orleans was the designated home team. They also wore black jerseys with black pants for the rest of their home games at the Superdome following the game at London.

The Saints wore their white jerseys at home for the first three home games of 2009. All with the white jerseys and gold pants combination. They have worn the all-black combo the last two home games. For its run through the 2009 playoffs, the team wore the gold pants.

New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame

The Saints Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization created by and for fans of the team to protect, preserve, promote and present the history of the franchise. The Saints Hall of Fame is located at 415 Williams Boulevard in the Rivertown section of Kenner. Open from 9 am-5 pm Tuesday through Saturday, the Hall of Fame features exhibits and memorabilia covering the entire history of the Saints from their formation through the current season. Due to building damage received during Hurricane Katrina the Hall of Fame is temporarily located at Gate B in the New Orleans Superdome and can be visited for free at every Saints home game. Fans can view videotapes on Saints history and the Saints Hall of Famers as well participate in interactive exhibits throughout the Hall. The facility, which originally opened on July 16, 1988, was expanded to twice its' original size in January 2004. Busts and paintings of each of the inductees along with their career highlights are one of the focal points of the museum, which is dedicated to preserving the history of the Saints franchise. New Orleans and Green Bay are the only two NFL franchises with a team Hall of Fame facility.

Radio and television

The Saints' flagship station is WWL 870AM (FM Simulcast on WWL 105.3FM), one of the oldest radio stations in the city of New Orleans and one of the nation's most powerful as a clear-channel station with 50,000 watts of power. Jim Henderson and Hokie Gajan form the broadcast team. Most preseason games are televised on Cox Sports Television and WVUE (Channel 8), a station which has been owned by a consortium led by Saints owner Tom Benson since mid-2008. Tim Brando and Solomon Wilcots call the preseason action.

Shopping Florida Style - From Luxury to Eclectic, You'll Find it Here

We lived in Atlanta during, what I consider, my formidable years 11-16, and if you know anything about Atlanta when I say there's a shopping mall on practically every corner I'm sure you'd agree. I loved to shop and Christmas time when most people would rather have a root canal than go to a public shopping venue was my favorite time of the year. I loved the crowds, the deals, the packaging, the merchandise itself, pretty much everything about it. We moved to Florida in the summer of my sixteenth year and I was introduced to a whole new world of shops and shopping.

Around my last year of High School my family bought a place near Hilton Head Island and one of the things I loved about it immediately were the all the shopping opportunities. They have two types of venues that were new to me, the massive outlet malls and the pedestrian mall, these are like malls without walls where all the stores are lined up on either side of you and maybe be in several different clusters on the property. A couple of places spring to mind when I think of major outlet malls in Florida, St. Augustine, Vero and of course Orlando. I've been to all of these places and have done my share to stimulate the economy at each. What I love about an outlet mall is I always leave feeling like I've not only gotten my money's worth but I've gotten it on good, quality name brand items.

Another wonderful thing about shopping in Florida is the weather. The weather here is sunny and warm most of the year making it a great place for pedestrian malls and what are called shopping districts, which are basically parts of the town where many shops are centrally located. The Avenue Viera is one such place it has many great shops as well as various places to grab a bite and even see a movie. They have department stores like Belk and specialty stores like Cold Water Creek. Theses places are really great because you get a wonderful sense of the local flare. There are also several bars and theaters with historical significance throughout the area, it's a really cool place to spend the day.

We travel around the state a lot and one thing I always look for are flea markets. Now before you turn your nose up and think of it all as junk let me just say you can find some really unique eclectic things at a flea market, enjoy some funnel cake and even, at some, enjoy the local talent as they belt out their renditions of their favorite songs using a karaoke machine. You can find cell phone accessories, candles, buy jewelry or get it repaired, find siding or landscaping for your home, get some artwork or buy a rug and get some fantastic deals on designer sunglasses and purses. My family and I were at the Daytona Flea Market, one of the largest and best know in the state, and my aunt saw this adorable tea cup poodle, we named her Misty and she is with us to this day.

Florida is a big state containing many fabulous places to shop. So where do you go to find the best shopping in Florida? Just head out and keep and open mind, you're sure to find a mall or flea market and if you're really fortunate you have a pedestrian or outlet mall close by. So gather a gaggle of your best girl friends and head out into the warm, sunshine for a day of bargain hunting, after all in this economy it's your Patriotic duty.

About the Author

It doesn't matter if you're browsing a flea market for something unique and interesting for your house, looking for designer duds for less, shopping the nearest mall for trusted brand names or making a day of it at one of our many pedestrian malls. Things to do in Florida has more information to help plan the perfect day to go on your own land based treasure hunt.

Critical Evaluation of Sarojini Naidu as a Great Poetess

Critical Evaluation of Sarojini Naidu as a Great Poetess

Sarojini Naidu's full name was Sarojinidevi Naidu. She was a great patriot and politician. As an orator and administrator she earned great fame. She was one of all the famous women of India. As a patriotic poetess, Mrs. Sarojinidevi Naidu's name is at the top. She was regarded as one of the jewels of the world. To honour one of the most famous heroines of the 20th century, her birthday is celebrated as Women's Day. She was known as the nightingale of India. Sarojini Naidu was born on February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad. Her father, Dr. Aghornath Chattopadhyaya, was the founder of Nizam College of Hyderabad. He was a great scientist. Sarojini Naidu's mother, Mrs. Varasundari was a Bengali poetess and Sarojini was inspired to be a poetess by her. Under her beloved mother's shelter she loved poetry from a very early age. In childhood, she wrote a full length poem entitled The Lady of the Lake. The poem consisted of 1300 lines. With her father's support, she wrote the play Maher Muneer. It was in the Persian language. She finished her studies just at the age of 19. Sarojini Naidu's major contribution was also in the field of poetry. It was the sweet lyricism of her poetry that contributed a lot to the popularity of her poetry. It had beautiful words that could also be sung with ease and melody. It brought her the famous title of being the nightingale of India for very soon she got recognition as the Bul Bule Hind. When India became independent she became the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. She was the first woman governor in India. She died on March 2, 1949.

Works and Contribution to Poetry—Sarojini Naidu's first collection of poems was published in 1905 under the title Golden Threshold. It was followed by the publication of two other collections of poems—The Bird of Time and The Broken Wings. In 1918 came her famous collection Feast of Youth. Then after she published The Magic Tree, The Wizard Mask and A Treasury of Poems. Her published poems impressed Mahashree Arvind, Rabindranath Tagore and Jawaharlal Nehru. There were thousands of admirers of her poetic work. It is said that her poems had English words, but an Indian soul. Shree Gopal Krishna Gokhale inspired her to compose patriotic songs and thus, to use her poetry and her beautiful words to give new life or energy to the spirit of Independence in the hearts of Indian villagers. He asked her to use her talent to liberate Mother India. In 1916, she met Mahatma Gandhi. It was a turning point for then after she totally directed her energy to the fight for freedom. She would wander around the country to sing poems and deliver speeches to pour enthusiasm among the hearts of Indians. The independence of India became the heart and soul of her work.

Her Popular Poems—Sarojini Naidu's most popular poems are: Awake; Guerdon; The Lotus; Indian Weavers; To a Buddha Seated on a Lotus; and Song of Radha, the Milkmaid. Among them Awake and The Lotus are taken from her collection entitled The Broken Wing. Guerdon and Song of Radha, the Milkmaid are taken from The Bird of Time. Indian Weavers and To a Buddha Seated on a Lotus are taken from The Golden Threshold. Sarojini Naidu's famous poem Awake is a patriotic song. Sarojini Naidu composed the poem wishing for India's freedom. In this patriotic song Sarojini Naidu accounts for the Glory of the Bharat Mata wishing for a bright tomorrow with a call for unity against all the ills of the time. They promise to serve her with a true heart. They would give up their narrow differences and come together for this great purpose. She is sure that this dream of freedom would become a reality when all creeds are united. Guerdon is an inspiring song. All objects and creatures in the world aspire for something or the other. Mostly they wish for worldly rewards but the poetess wishes for spiritual gain. The poetess aspires for the rapture of love and truth. She has no interest in worldly delights. It is her sublime nature that she wishes to see all satisfied. The Lotus is a sonnet in which the poetess pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The poetess accounts for Mahatma Gandhi's greatness. As the lotus springs from dirt and mire but remains free from its evil effect and inspires all with its beauty and quality, Mahatma Gandhi blessed the country by remaining free from the evils of his time. He faced all violent forces quite bravely and brought the country to success. His popular effectiveness among common people is everlasting. He taught the ways of attaining peace of mind. All express respect for his glorious heart. Indian Weavers deals with the three basic stages of human life represented by birth of a child, marriage in young-age and death at last. The human society belonging to any religion or country follows it without exception. It is a philosophic poem that suggests how life is full of joys and sorrows. Both are inevitable. A wise man ought to do his duty like weavers who make robe for all occasions of joy and sorrow. To a Buddha Seated on a Lotus is a symbolic poem. In this symbolical poem, the idol of Lord Buddha is used as a symbol of peace. Lord Buddha is seated on a lotus. The image symbolizes meditation. The flower of Lotus is the traditional symbol of life. The image of Lord Buddha seated on a lotus presents the symbol of peace attained in human life through meditation. Meditation implies the search for truth. It is possible only after getting rid of worldly desires. Dreams of worldly gains lead to loss of mental peace. To express firm faith in God and noble action is the true way of living. Sarojini Naidu's famous poem Song of Radha, the Milkmaid is a folk-song based on Radha's love for her lover Govinda. Radha is a milkmaid. She goes to Mathura to sell her milk-products. She fails in selling her products. She remains lost in the thought of Govind. Her mind is over-filled with the name of Govinda. Govinda is a cowboy and flute player. This symbolical poem exposes an irony that most of religious people have no sense of true religion.

Philosophic Aspect of her Poetry—Sarojini Naidu expresses deep philosophy in her poetry. For example, To a Buddha Seated on a Lotus is a great philosophic poem that refers to a popular idol of Lord Buddha. He is sitting on a lotus in the mood of meditation, with praying eyes and hands. There is a mystic delight on his face. The image inspires eternal peace of mind attained in human life through meditation. Meditation implies the search for truth. Lotus springs from dirt and mire but remains free from the evil effect of surroundings. It inspires all to remain free from evils and ills of worldly life. The poetess wishes to know how common people may attain this sublime state. The simple answer is hidden in Lord Buddha's life. He was a born prince but gave up his royal comforts. He lived like a saint and still today he is called a lord while people have forgotten all the kings of that time. Indian Weavers is a philosophic poem that suggests how life is full of joys and sorrows. Both are inevitable. A wise man ought to do his duty like weavers who make robe for all occasions of joy and sorrow. Sarojini Naidu's famous poem Guerdon is an inspiring song. All objects and creatures in the world aspire for something or the other. Mostly they wish for worldly rewards but the poetess wishes for spiritual gain. She aspires for the rapture of love and truth. She has no interest in worldly delights. It is her sublime nature that she wishes to see all satisfied.

Patriotic Aspect of her Poetry—Sarojini Naidu was a great patriotic leader. Her poetry is rich in this element. Her famous poem Awake is an inspiring patriotic song. Sarojini Naidu composed the poem wishing for India's freedom. In this patriotic song Sarojini Naidu accounts for the glory of the Bharat Mata. She wishes for a bright tomorrow with a call for unity against all the ills of the time. The people of India make a promise to serve her with a true heart. They would give up their narrow differences of caste or religion and come together for this great purpose. She is sure that this dream of freedom would become a reality when all creeds are united. The song has a great importance in the present context when the country is again being divided in the name of caste, religion or region. If such considerations are not forgotten, the country would again fall in the chains of slavery. The Lotus pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Psychological Aspect of her Poetry—Sarojini Naidu's poems are rich in the element of psychology. Its best example is Song of Radha, the Milkmaid. It is a folk-song based on Radha's love for her lover Govinda. Radha is a milkmaid. She goes to Mathura to sell her milk-products. She fails in selling her products. She remains lost in the thought of Govinda. Her mind is over-filled with the name of Govinda. Govinda is a cowboy and flute player. It brings to a psychological fact that Sub-conscious state of mind overrules the conscious. It dominates human actions. For example, Radha visits the Mathura fair. She carries curds to sell there. She is conscious to her purpose of selling curds. But she takes interest in seeing cows softly lowing in joy. Cows are associated with Govinda. They remind her of Govinda's activities. She has a lot of curds to sell. She hawks to sell the curds. She wants to praise the quality of her curds that it is as white as the clouds in the sky when the breezes blow in the month of Shrawan. But she is so greatly lost in love of Govinda that her mind remembers nothing but her beloved Govinda. She begins to call Govinda in place of curds. Seeing her madness, all the people laugh at her for she remains crying 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'!; as if she were selling Govinda in place of curds. She is attracted towards the river flowing softly. The cow and the river attract her for these both are beloved to Govinda.

But my heart was so full of your beauty, Beloved,

They laughed as I cried without knowing:

'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'!

How softy the river was flowing!

Treatment of Love—Sarojini Naidu's treatment of love is excellent. Her concept of love is true and sublime. It is spiritual. For example, Song of Radha, the Milkmaid is a folk-song based on Radha's love for her lover Govinda. Radha is a milkmaid. She remains lost in the thought of Govinda. Her mind is over-filled with the name of Govinda. Govinda is a cowboy and flute player. She visits the Mathura tide to take water from the Yamuna. She carries pots there. She is delighted to see the sailors rowing the boat joyfully. Her friends are dancing and they ask her to join them to dance and sing wearing saffron garments in order to welcome the spring. Friends ask her to come with them and pluck the new buds that were blowing. But, Radha does not take interest in such activities for her heart is filled with the music of Govinda's flute. Her friends laugh at her when she shouts unknowingly 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! Govinda'! She takes delight in seeing the river flowing happily. It proves her love for Govinda is true and sublime. It is spiritual.

Use of Symbol and Irony—Sarojini Naidu's use of symbol and irony is worth praising. For example, To a Buddha Seated on a Lotus is a symbolic poem. Indian Weavers is a symbolic poem. The poem deals with the three basic stages of human life represented by birth of a child, marriage in young-age and death at last. The poetess uses morning early night and passing of night as symbols of birth, marriage and death. It is early in the morning. It suggests the beginning of the day. Human life has always been compared with a day. Song of Radha, the Milkmaid is a folk-song based on Radha's love for her lover Govinda. It is a symbolical poem that is full of irony. Radha is symbol of human soul and Govinda is symbol of God, the Great soul. Human soul always aspires to meet God. This symbolical poem exposes an irony that most of religious people have no sense of true religion. Radha visits the Mathura fair. She carries gifts to offer to the temple. She takes interest in seeing bright torches glowing in the fair and temple. She folds her hands at the altars and prays the shining gods to guard her all the time. The priests blow the conch shells loudly. All become attentive to it. But Radha's heart is so greatly lost in the worship of her Govinda that she hears nothing. Seeing it, all priests go angry when she begins to shout unknowingly: 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! She grows inattentive to the prayer going on in the temple and looks toward the river flowing softly. She is a true worshipper while the priests are pretenders.

But my heart was so lost in your worship, Beloved,

They were wroth when I cried without knowing:

'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'!

Use of Sensuous Art—Sarojini Naidu's sensuous art is remarkable. For example, Song of Radha, the Milkmaid is rich in sensuous art. There are lively word pictures. For example, the narration of Radha's dancing friends is highly sensuous. Her friends are dancing and they ask her to join them to dance and sing wearing saffron garments in order to welcome the spring. Friends ask her to come with them and pluck the new buds that were blowing. But, Radha's heart is filled with the music of Govinda's flute. Her friends laugh at her when she shouts unknowingly 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! 'Govinda'! Govinda'!

My comrades called, "Ho! Let us dance, let us sing

And wear saffron garments to welcome the spring.

And pluck the new buds that are blowing."

Indian Weavers is a highly sensuous poem. The opening stanza introduces a sensuous picture of a bright garment being woven in the morning. The robe is blue.

Blue as the wing of a halcyon wild

The robe for the marriage of a queen is of purple and green colour. Its sensuous description is attractive.

Like the plumes of a peacock, purple and green,

We weave the marriage-veils of a queen.

The funeral shroud is white like a feather or cloud. The poem is rich in sensuousness. Whiteness of the robe suggests the seriousness of the occasion.

Her Use of Poetic Imagery—Sarojini Naidu is excellent in use of poetic imagery. For example, Indian Weavers is a poem of poetic imagery. The poetess uses colour imagery to suggest different moods of human life. The blue coloured robe is for a new-born child. The purple green robe is for a royal wedding of a queen. The white robe is for funeral of a dead body.

Weavers, weaving solemn and still,

What do you weave in the moonlight chill?

The poem is rich in poetic imagery. The imagery of chill moonlight is remarkable. It suggests death for want of action. In The Lotus, she presents the flower imagery.
