Immigration never takes a holiday
Dear Reader,
The holidays are always a time for introspection. Not only are we approaching the end of the year, we are also approaching the end of the decade. It has been a decade that started with the events of 9/11 to the election of our first African-American president in 2008, Barack Obama, to the miraculous rescue of the Chilean miners.
Unfortunately, the decade also culminated with the rise in anti-immigration sentiment. This line of thinking has been validated by people in leadership roles, either in support of it, or worse, by saying nothing. Arizona passed the controversial immigration law, SB-1070. And many other states, like Colorado and Kentucky, are thinking of passing similar laws.
But the majority of americans do not think this way. Most of us know that we are a nation built upon the sweat and vision of immigrants. We are all the sons and daughters of those that came before – those that came to this country to escape persecution, to seek a better life, to live the American dream. The real America can be seen in every day acts of kindness, especially when times are tough. We not only look out after our families, but we are also are willing to give a helping hand to neighbors or even strangers in need. That's the real America and not the loud fanatics that thrive on instigating hatred.
Abraham Lincoln stated it best:
"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."
More beautiful words cannot be stated and a more wonderful sentiment cannot be felt. This is the real America and while the loud minority currently holds the microphone, the "better angels of our nature" will rise.
Immigration will never take a holiday because it cannot. And as we come to the end of the year, and of this decade, we should greet the New Year with tolerance and new ideas that will make this nation whole.

Michigan Football Team Detroit Lions Enjoyed First Half Lead, Kid Rock Entertains Halftime
DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan football fans enjoyed the first half of the Thanksgiving game against the New England Patriots as the Detroit Lions took the lead by a touchdown. It was a fight for the lead for the first half, but the Patriots could not find time or space to fight back the Detroit Lions.
The Lions used their running game to their advantage and unbalanced the Patriots' defense, which led to their success for the first part of the game. The defensive line on the Lions' side was more energetic and held the Patriots' first-half scoring in check. The Lions were happy to get its sack on the New England Quarterback, Tom Brady, in the first half. Had Brady had any time to make a pass, the Patriots may have been able to take the lead; but the Lions pushed hard to keep the Patriots locked where they were.
"We got after him, got him a little rattled," defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh said in a press interview.
There were great plays made by the Lions quarterback, Shaun Hill who sustained a fractured right shoulder injury during the Jets game a couple weeks prior, as nine different Lions receivers caught the ball during the game one resulting in a touchdown. The pressure was intense from the Lions as the first half ended, which was followed by Kid Rock during halftime as Ford Field rocked along with the Lions' halfway victory.
Unfortunately, Michigan football fans only had the first half and halftime celebration to enjoy the game, because once Brady and the Patriots regrouped for the second half, the tables turned quickly.
In the final two quarters, the Lions managed one more touchdown as they tied the Patriots 24-24 in the third quarter after the Patriots pounded out two touchdowns immediately after halftime. But the Lions couldn't hold the Patriots to 24. Brady was back with vengeance and nailed three more touchdowns in the final 21 minutes of the game to bring the final to 45-24.
The Lions came into the game with fire and strength, but it just goes to show what a little bit of pressure can do to a veteran quarterback like Brady as he quickly took that energy and turned it around.
The next game for the Lions is versus the Chicago Bears on December 5, 1:00pm.
