How We Lost America :: A Brief history in Ten Points
Preface: For anyone of predominantly White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (I.e. European) heritage to bemoan "How We Lost America" is the height of hypocrisy. But for the sake of the Cherokee blood in my veins mixed with that of the Aztecs in my children, I continue:
1. Whether God preceded Greed or Greed preceded God is debatable. The fact that all forms of government and all flavors of politics are the spawn of their unholy union is not.
2. At the core of Christianity is the pursuit of good. At the core of Capitalism is the pursuit of gold. Beginning in 1492 at the latest, these pursuits connected all continents, corruptly conflating in the process.
3. Global empires constructed on this corrupt conflation collided in what we called "the Great War", the bloody battlegrounds of which provided ideal breeding pools for the false profits and false prophets that followed.
4. Massive military machinations offered Sheeple on all sides salvation from depression and oppression. And at the end of what we called "World War II", an American military-industrial machine of unprecedented power prevailed.
5. Not wishing to part with their power or profits, the "rising military-industrial complex" and Kleptocracy Ike warned us about began clandestinely fomenting fears of foreign foes and promoting puppet politicians at home and abroad.
6. The demise of the Soviet Union brought about the need for a new Boogie Man to keep billions for bullets, bandages and bridges in the federal budget. And after some behind-the-scenes bargaining by the Good Ole Boys, the Bedouins were happy to oblige.
7. In the "Coup d'etat of 2000", the Kleptocracy overrode our Constitution and the electorate to install "Dubya", the idiot son of a former CIA Director, as POTUS (knowing that although they controlled Gore as well, he'd be harder to manage).
8. On 11 September 2001, the Kleptocracy allowed or orchestrated the massacre of thousands of innocent American Sheeple as pretext for the perpetuation of their war profiteering and Peak Oil reserve pursuits.
9. With the debris of the three towers still smoldering in Manhattan, political puppets Left and Right proudly voted away large portions of our Bill of Rights in what must have been laughingly labelled "The Patriot Act".
10. The 2008 election brought no "Change", as Gates stayed in charge at the Pentagon and Goldman-Sachs kept their hands in the Treasury. And to assure no change in 2010, Citizens United v FEC legalized unlimited anonymous (including foreign) corporate political donations.
And THAT's how we lost America, folks...

Herb Ellis - The Most Awesome Jazz Music Guitar Personality Ever
Jazz guitar player Herb Ellis like many other top American jazz guitar players (including Charlie Christian, Eddie Durham, and Oscar Moore) was born in the south western region of the the USA. The blues, with a touch of country music, are a distinctive characteristic of his jazz guitar music sound and his guitar playing technique. It is most surely owing to the atmosphere in which Ellis was brought up. Herb Ellis initially performed on the banjo, though it is stated he played the harmonica at the age of 4, and took up the guitar at the age of 10. While he was at high school he played alto horn in the school band. Ellis studied at the North Texas State College and helped start a jazz guitar music program there which included collection books of his jazz guitar tabs and jazz guitar tablatures. He met and befriended quite a few now well known jazz musicians while at this college such as Jimmy Giuffre, Gene Roland, and Harry Babasin.
Herb graduated in 1941 and joined Glen Gray's band. In 1945 he joined the Jimmy Dorsey Big Band traveling and performing with them for three years. Following that, Ellis formed his own instrumental / vocal trio known as "The Softwinds". This group, which showcased Lou Carter on Piano and Johnny Frigo on bass, performed with each other for 5 years. Through that time Herb authored various successful compositions such as "Detour Ahead" and "I Told You I Love You - Now Get Out". Ellis's jazz guitar expertise initially grew to become internationally acknowledged in 1953 when he took over from jazz guitar player Barney Kessel in the Oscar Peterson Trio. There is no question that in the course of his five year stint with Peterson, and his following four years accompanying the well known jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald, Ellis developed his musical talents as a soloist and accompanist to the fullest. It is in the course of this time that he also started a lengthy affiliation and friendship with bass performer Ray Brown.
After that time Herb Ellis led a professional career as one of the busiest jazz guitarists on the international jazz music scene. Through the years he performed and made albums with "The Great Guitars", a group that featured pickstyle jazz guitarist Barney Kessel and fingerstyle jazz guitar performer Charlie Byrd, in a duo with jazz guitar player Joe Pass, and as leader of his own trios and quartets. Although for quite a few years Ellis worked in the Los Angeles studio scene and was a regular member of the Don Trenner Band on the popular 'Steve Allen Show', he later went back to a lifestyle devoted to jazz guitar music once again appearing and making albums regularly with Oscar Peterson. Herb died on March 28th, 2010 but thankfully for aspiring guitarists, he published a number of jazz guitar tab books and DVD courses that teach his single note improvised solos and chord melody solos as well as the guitar techniques he used to play them

BOLLYWOOD SONGS – An effective narrative device
In Hollywood movies, Musicals are one genre that is exclusively based on songs and lyrics. With few exceptions songs are not a common narrative expression for other Genres. Though it has been observed that its musical score increases a movie's popularity. Celine Dion's "My heart will go on" for Titanic stayed on in public memory long after the movie left the cinema halls. The soundtrack of Love Story is one of the most enduring ever, and who doesn't download music from Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. Many a times, blockbusters become classics because of their excellent scores. Hence, composers and songwriters are in great demand in Hollywood and thus the producers are encouraged to use songs occasionally in Hollywood films.
The origin of songs in Bollywood movies can be attributed to the "Parsi Theatre" - the popular musical plays in the early 19th Century that influenced themes and styles of the early film productions. From thereon even though the film style and content diversified, the popularity of songs remained. In the contemporary Bollywood cinema, the craft of song imaging improved with technology and its relevance and contribution enhanced the art of populous Indian storytelling techniques. The mere means of entertainment emerged as a potent narrative device.
Most of the Bollywood films are essentially consumed by audiences of Indian origin across the globe thus they are dually influenced by the Indian ethos and the western lifestyle. Former assisting the mass acceptance and the latter satisfying the mass fantasy. These movies primarily express the importance Indians as a race give to human emotions and relationships. Bollywood songs contribute effectively to this expression. They movies range from emotional sagas to patriotic legends, romantic comedies to heart stopping thrillers. Irrespective of the genre, songs find an important role to play in the narrative structure of the story. There is something for all kinds of audiences. There is entertainment packed for everyone in one movie.
In the Indian popular culture there are songs for every occasion happy or sad. People sing songs to celebrate, to mourn or to rejuvenate, whatever may be the reason it is a popular expression of human emotions and way of life. Since the Bollywood movies are so deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of its societies, songs too become a potent device of expression in any dramatic situation of a film story. They have remained and shall remain one of the most popular genres of music in the Indian peninsula.
Bollywood films continue to be renowned for the excessive song and dance sequences that also play a pivotal role in making Indian cinema both unique and popular across the globe. Songs are used in Indian movies mainly to entertain but they also prove to be an effective device in rendering otherwise mundane but essential information without compromising the emotional quotient of the story. An appropriate love song enhances a romantic setting. Similarly songs have been used to make audiences laugh and cry with the characters. In fact the story itself can be narrated through cleverly inserted songs. Moreover, song montages replace elaborate scenes enhancing emotions and providing more significance to the narrative expression by eliminating conversations. Thus the overall dramatic impact of the story is heightened.

Discovering Indonesian Art At The TIM Centre
Taman Ismail Marzuki Art Centre which is known as the TIM art centre was named after a prominent Jakarta-born composer who is well known for his efforts in promoting the arts in the country. Unlike many other art centers in Indonesia, the TIM centre has a unique approach to promoting art and culture among the locals as well as tourists. Instead of the usual dichotomy of traditional art versus modernism, this centre embraces both styles and showcases the best of both worlds. Traditional dance performances such as Wayang, dramas and Puppet Theater are among the regular features of the centre's program.
The Taman Ismail Marzuki Art Centre is particularly well known for presenting local Indonesian artists and other regional artists from countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. Staying true to the vision of Ismail Marzuki, who was well known for composing patriotic songs during the early days of the Indonesian independence, the centre helps promote the indigenous music of the region.
Perhaps the most popular song composed by Marzuki was Rayuan Pulau Kelapa (Solace on a Coconut Island), which gained many accolades locally as well as internationally. His work was honored posthumously by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2004 with him being declared a national hero.
The TIM centre fills in a long-felt void in the cultural scene in Jakarta. Earlier, many local artists where hampered by the lack of a proper venue to perform. But with the establishment of the art centre they now have state-of-the-art facilities as well as a regular appreciative audience. The centre also has a planetarium that is a favorite among schoolchildren. Located within easy access of Jakarta accommodation such as the Somerset Berlian which is a serviced apartment in Jakarta, the TIM art centre is well worth a visit by a tourist in the city.
